How legal are QuickTime Alternative & Real Alternative?

Saw a lot of postings about the new version of QuickTime Alternative and Real Alternative everywhere (including Major Geeks) lately.

I agree it is a good idea to be able to use the codec without the player / crap installed, but I've released that the QT Alternative actually has a cracked QT7Pro Key... That is definately illegal! isn't it??

Why do mainstream software / news site (******** / majorgeeks / warp2search) still post this software then? What's next? Keygen for Nero?

The same for the codec pack, some has cracked DivX Pro inside!

    Please response...

    verified facts?

Just install QT Alternative, then go into setting, you'll see QT is Cracked / (or registered) with a Key!! That turns QT into QT Pro!

Novice: thx, I always come to majorgeeks, but first visit to the forum to express my concern about this kind of software making their ways into the mainstream legal software sites...

    What version are you using?

What mirror did you download it from?

Allow me to clarify. As far as I know these version are all legal. That said, last release there was indeed a serial number that worked in Quicktime. We removed it as soon as we were made aware. Anyone who comes here will tell you we do not support pirated software, as do very few legit sites, so keep in mind what you saw was one slip up by most websites :)

Few months ago I was encoding a qt video using a third party app(Streambox action). It normally allows me to use limited feautures from codecs like zygo, qualcom, sorenson etc.The pro versions of the codecs were activated when I installed the quicktime alternative software.I did not think too much about it then.

It has a Pro serial number included. Because this is the second time, both Real Alternative and Quicktime Alternative have been removed and will not be allowed on MajorGeeks ever again. Thanks Fanbanlo for the heads up, people like you policing us make us what we are.

Forgive me if I've misunderstood this, but I didn't think that Real Alternative had any sort of cracked serial number in it at all.

I knew QuickTime Alternative did (it has done since about 1.62-63), but AFAIK Real Alternative is clean (in that sense).

Nope, you didnt misunderstand, but were not taking any chances. If they did it in Quicktime, how long before Real? Not going to find out. The people doing this are not trustworthy.

    Fair enough.

I think the way Real Alternative works is different from QuickTime Alternative, so I'm not even sure there would be any scope for such nefarious activities anyway. I'll continue to use them (as I despise the official versions), but fully respect MajorGeeks' decision to remove them from the site.

It must have only been the last release as Major Attitude stated.

I have 7.0.2, and it doesn't have a serial number of any type, and the "Buy QuickTime Pro" button takes you to Apples' page.

I'm pretty sure they're illegal, and keep from getting busted cause they're based out of Hungary, which hasn't made many laws re: softwarez...

I looked it up a while back because I had the same question, and found a good discussion archived on slashdot in which peeps talked about it.

It has to do with the licence agreements, which say you can only use the codecs in the player they came in, not to make new ones, or something to that effect.

They are available from the originating site and others. I find this one borderline, it seemed like a good idea ruined by warez pups.
