How do I know what program is grabbing my Comm Port

I am trying to use BitPim to send my old phone info to my new one. I've used it before without problem, but after installing my new Samsung (as a modem) it is unavailable on COM 5 as it is listed in the Device Manager properties, but does show up and is available on COM 6. (In other words it is listed on both coms.) COM 6 is useless as it will not receive the phone info at all... everything is grayed out. In BitPim troubleshooting it says occasionally some software will grab the com port and make it unavailable such as PALM or HotSync (neither of which I have. I am using Windows XP, on a E-series Dell 2006... Any ideas as to what other programs might be doing this? or is there a way to try again like re-installing the phone and get around this problem another way?

    Thanks!

Thats not a real com port, its a software com port. So it can be various types of software. How is the phone hooked up? Surely its usb...isn't there a USB port option?

Have you tried auto detecting the port? (I have the OS X version, its not the same).

It is a USB data cable that came with the phone and a driver on disc. Once I installed it it said "new phone detected". Under "Choose a Comm Port" settings it says "Your operating system shows this driver and port are correctly configured" (Active/True)...next line (Available/False) " it was not possible to open this port".

It popped into the available port just before I wrote this after a re-start and a re-connecting of the phone, but then went back to unavailable. RRRRrrrrr
