I currently have McAfee Antivirus on my computer and I dont like it because my computer doesnt run it very well. For instance when i am in the virus scan console and i try to open the quarantine folder to it wont open. I am wondering what kind of virus protection you people like the most and works the best that is free online or available through the MG website?

Moving this to Software Forum as it is not a Malware issue.

Personally I love Avast. You can see the range of software available from Majorgeeks.com at this link.

You are absolutely right in not wanting to use MacAfee. It is a resource hog, and when the entire suite is installed, I have counted 14 different MacAfee programs running at all times in the background.... 14!!! Ridiculous. It's no wonder your PC is running slow. On my home PC I run Avira's AntiVir for virus protection. It has automatic updates and offers great protection IMO. For spyware, I use Comodo's BoClean, another low resource, very effective program, and Comodo's firewall. All are free and I have never, EVER had an infection. I have had a few warnings, but the malware was stopped before it got in. When removing MacAfee, it best to use the uninstall tool available free here at MajorGeeks: http://www.majorgeeks.com/McAfee_Consumer_Product_Removal_Tool_d5420.html Here's links to the programs I mentioned:
    Avira's AntiVir http://www.majorgeeks.com/AntiVir_Personal_Edition_7_d955.html
    Comodo's BOClean http://www.majorgeeks.com/Comodo_BOClean_Anti-Malware_d5616.html
    Comodo's Firewall http://www.majorgeeks.com/Comodo_Personal_Firewall_d5033.html
If you use Internet Explorer as your main browser, I also recommend using Browser Hijack Retaliator. It protects many areas of IE including the home page, favorites, BHOs, and much more...
    Broswer Hijack Retaliator http://www.majorgeeks.com/Browser_Hijack_Retaliator_d4582.html
All of the apps mentioned are 100% free to download and use, and you can run them all at the same time without any loss of performance. One 'complaint' some people have with AntiVir is that when it updates, a 'nag screen' pops up with an ad for the full paid version. No big deal. Just close it. It doesn't bother me, but some people really are annoyed by it. I believe there's a way to block it by using the firewall to block avnotify.exe or something....

Ya sorry about posting in the wrong place. I was just wondering if I go with all the protection that dlb is suggesting does that mean I should get rid of the protection software i already have installed? i.e. superantispyware, spybot search and destroy, CCleaner (to be honest I dont even know if I really need all of that anyways because im not sure if superantispyware and spybot search and destroy do the same thing or not)? I already know that I cant have two sources of virus protection and the other thing is that my modem has a firewall built in, in the "read and run me first" it says two firewalls isnt the best idea. Let me know and thanks for helping me out.

The free version of Super Antispyware does not offer much in the way of realtime protection; I think it only prevents home page changing. SpyBot is good, and CCleaner isn't really protection. It is an on-demand file cleaner and registry cleaner, and it's more of a maintenance tool than a protection tool. So, keep the stuff you have installed, and you can probably installed the stuff I listed also, but BOClean may be redundant and unneeded with SpyBot installed. I don't think there would be any problems if BOClean and Spybot were running together, however.

If you read carefully the link I gave you in Post #2 it tells you how many applications you should have installed from each section. This will give you a good guide as to whether you have enough of the right software to protect your computer. Each one that refers to Malware removes slightly different malware to another application, hence the need to sometimes have more than one.
