Ok I thought maybe one of ya'll would have a clue as to what is happening here. I am at a total loss.

Today my puter shut down per the "Thermal Protection". I have it set at 65c, so the first thing I checked was to make sure the cpu fan was working, which it is. I had changed nothing whatsoever. Now I disabled the protection just to see how hot it was getting, it went to 86c.

Now for the really strange thing. The next time I tried to boot up I had no power. Well that's not exactly true either. hehe The board itself was getting power but it would not boot up. It would try to then just stop. I put another PSU in & it's running now, but I can't make it cooler than the 54c it's running at now. It doesn't seem to get any hotter under load & that's freakin' me out as well. I'm checking these temps thru both Sandra & the BIOS. Get the same in both. The new PSU is only 200 watts compared to the 425 I had before. Can it be that the lower power is makin' it run hotter?

I've checked the PSU in another box and it no worky there either. So I had changed nothing and it was runnning hotter, now I have a smaller PSU and it's still running hotter. All fans are working, but it's running hot. What could be the problem?

My spec are in my sig.

yes it can, the PSU has to work way harder thus creating more heat.
replace the PSU with at least a 350W one asap.

Ok thnx man. So I could then safely say that the PSU is what's been causing all my problems lately? Because as of 2 days ago all was fine.

Now I must add that I've had a CPU & MB fry recently. It was working just fine then nothin'. I was using the 425watt then as well. It had never ran hot & was not overclocked in any way. Just died. The CPU ws clearly fried. I've sent the MB back to Gigabyte, just waiting for it to return.

While I wish none of this had happened.........................I believe I've found something I really enjoy doing. Building computers. LOL When I get the cosmetics all fixed up I will try to get a pic of the "Highly Modified" Gateway Case I am now using. Also for anyone that cares? Never & I mean never buy a "Just4Pc" case, biggest Piece "O Crap I've ever come across.

yes, your PSU just crapped out, probably due to overheating.
If a PSU overheats, it craps out.

    WHOOHOO

Ok I believe I got it all worked out now. After many many hours of swearing & the pulling of hair ( something I can't really afford :D ). I spent some money and rearranged alot of stuff.

    My sytem specs:
    XFX KT33F-ANB
Athlon XP2400+ - Speeze all copper heatsink modified w\an 80mm Speeze fan on top.
Corsair 512MB PC2700 DDR 333MHz - Thermaltake Active Memory Cooling Kit
    ASUS V9280TD Geforce4 Ti4200 128MB - Zalman ZM80A-HP VGA Heatpipe Cooler
120gig IBM Deskstar - Speeze 4B02S4 Hard Disk Cooler
    LG 16x DVD
    LG GCE 8240b 24x10x40 CD-RW
    AC97 Avance Logic ALC650
    Polk-Audio AMR150 speakers
    NEC AccuSync AS70 17"
    Windoze XP Pro
All inside a highly ( and I do mean highly ) modified Gateway case  w\ 4 80x80mm Speeze case fans, Vantec round cables all around & an Antec 430W TRUE430 PSU
    APC Back-UPS 300

    Temps now are..........
    CPU 37c
    GPU 34c
    Video ram 28c

Also would like to add that I for one woould not suggest to anyone to try & save money when buying a PSU. I had a PowMax & had nothin' but problems since I got it. I've since learned that when people say that the PSU is the most overlooked component of a computer, they mean it. LOL

Have I said how much I love these boards lately????

So true... and yet the Antec 480 I invested in is annoying me... It has temp control, but I swear the fans barely spin. I can't even tell if they are running by feeling behind the pc. Darn thing, I wish there was a way to just max it out.
