Hi all and MERRY CHRISTMAS! I'm doing some major 'housekeeping' on my old Win95 machine. I got invaded (hijacked). A virus scan shows no 'viruses'. But a bunch of strange .exe files got downloaded to my system. I've isolated them with the 'find' features (by date created) and deleted them in safe mode. I tried to delete all/most of my temporary internet files. However, no icons or files can be seen in the folder window but 'properties' lists 5 sub-folders and nearly 1400 files. I'd like to browse the files before I delete everything. How to I see them?
Also, I deleted some registry keys and values related to this recent invasion. A file showed up in C:\Windows that shows other registry modifications. I dont know if it's an export or the new values. I'll try to post a screenshot ASAP so y'all can help me figure this out.
    Thanks much.

What you may need to do is make all files un-hidden... goto tools > folder options > view and pick show hidden files and folders.

Then hopefully the hidden folders and files will appear for deletion.

other than that I would download the trial version of East-Tec Eraser 2004 ( valid for 30days of use ) and let that program delete your Temporary Internet Folder.

one word of warning tho it will delete all your cookies as well so if you have some setup for websites you visit they will be deleted too unless when you click Protect Browser Traces you then click IE > Properties and untick Cookies from the cleaning process.

and yes any ore info you have will help a great deal to remove your strange files eg. names of files

    regcleaner

    Hello,
Regcleaner has an excellent program to view and delete/modify/move all registry entries on your computer. it automatically backs up deletes just in case. although one time I deleted the file that opened regcleaner...but that's another story. Anyhow, it's available here at majorgeeks for download and I highly recommend it. Just be careful. Here is a good file identifier site for what will be listed:

Good luck. Always use an updated firewall, anti-virus, spyware/trojanhorse/adware/script program.

    Halo and wcdeuv,
Thanks for your replies. I use RegSupreme. It's a pretty good registry utility. I'm giving up on Win95. Tomorrow I reformat and install WinME. Every time I run Aida32 it says, "upgrade your OS you stubborn old fool!" ;) This box is the 'black sheep' of my home LAN. It's a Pentium(r) 233mhz, 64mb RAM, 8gig HDD. Nothing runs on Win95 anymore. Not ZoneAlarm, or 99% of the adventure games I like to play.
As long as this box continues to work I can't justify throwing it away!

I have to agree, I have an old ass dianosaur too but it consistently gives me less problems and headaches than the newer beasts in our home.
    good luck

The understatement of the year, and the year is almost over!

Is there any way you could get a no-longer-used copy of 98SE and its key from a friend? (I hate to see you substitute a terrible OS for a messed-up one.) It would be worth the trip across town or whatever, just in headaches avoided.

Interesting comment, Wisewiz. I got the same advice from a sibling (my brother), who's a very advanced OS and networking expert. Strangely, he's the one supplying me with WinME.
What are the drawbacks/pitfalls of ME?

Oh, my! Got a couple of DAYS???

The easier question to answer is "Is there ANYthing about Windows Me that is an improvement over Windows 9x?"
A: Yep. The defragger is a bit better.

Ok. Is there any OTHER reason to choose Me over 9x?
    A: Nope.

Me is admittedly (that is, MS has admitted this) the most flawed OS from MS since Windows 3. It's incomplete, it's unstable, it's inefficient, ... it's as full of bugs as an ant farm.

I think your brother is willing to lend you his Me CD because it's what he's GOT that he's not USING. I'm being charitable because of the season. Mebbe he's just out to get you. You should never have run over his pet frog. Or mebbe he owns stock in an aspirin company.

    LOL!

That was one of the funniest comments I've read all day.
