As the title says I've tried this guide from my digital life so far with zero success,I followed the 64 bit instructions to the letter, when right clicking an .mpg file I do not have the option to set as descktop background I also don't have Dreamscene folder in my C:windows/web after following the instructions.

    http://www.mydigitallife.info/2009/01/14/how-to-install-and-enable-dreamscene-in-windows-7/

I'm using windows 7 64 home premium OEM which may be the problem,I believe the applet was called Dreamscene in Vista but isn't supported by default in Win7.

If anyone knows of a way to get this working I'd be mucho appreciato.:)Anyone followed that guide and got it working?

    Cheers...

What I do have now is a greyed out "Play DreamScene" when I right click anywhere on the desktop

So I guess I just need to point it to an file somehow,I've also just tried creating a Dreamscene folder in C:Windows/web and putting both a ideo and a file containing a video, neither worked.

Is this in relation to the 'yule log' post by the mechanik?

Yeah why?BTW anyone reading this who would also like a Yule log as their background in Windows 7.

I've downloaded a high definition 1080p and 720p versions here at Youtube using the download helper plugin for firefox, you don't have to use these of course but they're the best I've found on youtube.

    1080p

    Decent 720p

    Then converted the files with the excellent Format factory as recommended by DLB available here at MG;

If anyone knows of any better looking HD fire videos I'd love a link or two.

I was having trouble with the gadgets which I thought was the way to go. I'll go your way now as I almost installed 'My Web Search' from a dodgy place.:eek

    Transparent text problem

This is has almost become too much trouble:-D I followed two method's and neither worked, both reset back to transparent text after reboot I've added them here for reference.

Here's the fix that finally worked for me.

    1. Right click your video and set it as desktop background.

2.Set folder options to show hidden files, control panel/folder options/view/show hidden files and folders, "Mine was already set to show hidden files and folders"

3.Go to C:/users/'USERNAME'/Appdata/roaming/microsoft/windows dreamscene,,there will be two files of your dreamscene set both files to read only and uncheck hidden.

4.Right click the desktop, personalise, desktop background you should see two images, make sure both images are ticked and set picture position to 'fill' and save changes.

I just renamed the file from 'Living Fireplace.mp4' to 'Living Fireplace.mp4.mpg'.

That's the first thing I did but it still wouldn't allow me to set it as desktop background, that guide is for vista, did it work for you in Win 7? It has a lot of problems with different codecs,I'm playing around with HD WMV formats and the video pauses after about 30 mins with this error.

The video plays fine in windows media player, all my codecs are up to date, the video is only 10mins long so it isn't a loop problem.

I've had low definition mpg running now for about 2 hours without problems though.

    Yes. Windows 7 x64 and I'm using K-lite Full. I haven't tested it on 32 bit yet.

Figured it out, I hadn't unchecked 'hide extensions for known file types in folder options' I realised when I checked the details it was still and MP4,renaming the video extension to .mpg now gives me the set as desktop background option.

For anyone who wandered her and is having this problem Start menu/control panel/folder options/view/uncheck hide extensions for known file type.

    :)
