3 days ago I dl'ed some nasty Trojan and Adware. It was the Smitfraud virus and some other malware. It installed popups all over my laptop, slowed it down, ect..

1st time I run McAffee. Did not remove Smitfraud virus.

2nd time, run SpyBot - Removes all spyware except Smitfraud.

3rd time - I Dl'ed a good free Smitware removal software that was mentioned on this forum (forgot the name). Run my computer in safe mode, and it confirms it to be removed. I restart in safemode, run both the Smitfraud removal program and spybot and both confirm everything is removed.

Now, I reboot, start laptop normally. Windows boots, and when it looks like it's going to show the desktop I get a blue background color, and a DOS box that pops up all over my screen everywhere. Disappears and reappears and the C:\windows\system32\ is within this box as well. I can not access start menu or anything else. I can't go to task manager either. I just have to pull the power cord out the back.

My pc now only works in safe mode. Did I remove something my computer needs, or is the virus still in my pc? Could it be Mcaffee?

I do not have any logs as I am currently at work. I am trying to do this myself without having to pay someone.

    Thanks :cool

If your PC is able to function in safe mode then please follow the below where it states that the procedures can be run in safe mode

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please follow the instructions in the below link and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

    • If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.
READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

    Notes:
    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode. You can running steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools on another PC and burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.

I ran combo fix among other programs and nothing seemed to work. So I transfered all my important data on a flash drive and reformatted my hard drive (which I should have done earlier) instead of messing with this virus for 3 days. Luckily I have a PC for work and a laptop for fun and none of my important data was affected/

    Hi...

Without us seeing your logs, you wouldn't really know what happened....we could have seen exactly what was wrong and dealt with it had you followed the "read and run me first" completely. If you ran the tools already, it wouldn't have took much more effort to send us the logs

It's a pity that you didn't follow our procedures... we could have almost certainly have got your computer on it's feet again. However..it appears to be far too late for that considering what you decided to do.

If you have any more problems please start a new thread.

If you have no other concerns with this machine I shall consider this thread dealt with :)

    Thanks
