My daughter had a problem with this computer so she sent it to me to fix, Ha. I can't give you details on how it was infected, or when. It does match the problems others have posted here. I have completed the Read & Run me first. I tried to do it step by step, hopefully the correct way. I will post the reports required for you to look at. I would appreciate any help you can give. I will send 2nd post with MGlogs.zip log.

    Thanks

Part of the reason you were so infected is you have no anti-virus software installed.

The good news is that the scans removed most of it.

Please disable the guest account in user accounts.

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following:

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it(Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.
    * Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * Do not change any check box options!!
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:

    * Now click the Execute button.
    * Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    * Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    * Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

    Now download and install:
    Java Runtime 6

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Avenger.

Be sure to tell us how things are running.

My daughter went out and bought Norton anti-virus, and the McAfee total protection and sent it to me with the CPU. A little late, but I will install one of them as soon as we are complete here.

I have removed windows messenger, and completed the other steps you requested. Attached are the logs.

    Thank you for your help!!!!!!!

Sorry, forgot to tell you about computer. Almost everything seems normal except the background. On the user (Jeannette) I was able to change to the normal XP background, the other 4 users still have a solid blue background, icons are ok and the warning message is gone. When I try to set them to the default XP theme, they still remain blue (except for the one). At first they showed a "modified" , but now it just shows the xp theme, but solid blue?

Also, I hope I did not mess up but just so you are aware, before I received your reply, I downloaded the latest Java Runtime, and also Service Pack 3 for Windows XP. This was before doing any of the latest scans.

    Again, THANKS for your help!

Never a good idea to do a service pack when there may be malware still present. :)

I want you to log into each user account and run SAS and MalwareBytes on each. Make sure you remove anything it finds.

Are you using any software that may prevent system changes .....spybot may be blocking it. But tell me the results of running those scans on the individual accounts.

I have run SAS and MalwareBytes on each of the other user accounts as instructed, this was done with full scan, not quick scan.

The SAS returned 9 hits on adware, trojan Vundo, and Rogue Antivirus 2008, all were registry items none on the memory or files.

The MalwareBytes returned hits on adware, several hijack wallpaper, etc. All were Registry Keys, Values, there were no items for memory or files.

They were all sucessfully removed and the files deleted. I can now change the wallpaper on all user accounts.

I did not run under Administrator alone, all of the user accounts are set as administrator.

    Thanks for helping with this!

I will not touch anything until I hear back.

I would suggest that you change the other users accounts to limited.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
