I have a folder in my c drive root directory named games. I keep removing it's read only attribute, but it comes back every time. I tried unmarking it as a system file (if it already was), with the dos command attrib -s games, but that didn't work either. I think windows file protection has it because the name of the folder is in blue instead of black. I'm running xp pro.

also, what's a .chk file? I found one hidden in a system folder.

I don't think you can change the read only attribute of a folder. Only the files in it.
If you want a little more control over WFP, you can with X-teq.

Navigate to SYSTEM/SOFTWARE INSTALLATION/WINDOWS FILE PROTECTION.

Correct. Read Only will always stay checked on a folder in XP. Completely by design.

Your folder isn't read only. If it was, then you wouldnt be able to change the name of it.

Ok, so it's not read only, but why does the read only box not uncheck?, and why is it highlighted in blue?

    [edit] ya beat me...

The folder is in blue because NTFS compression is being used, IIRC.

Anything compressed by NTFS turns blue.

No, it doesn't slow anything down. NTFS compression is cool ;)

When you go properties of the folder, click advanced and make sure NOTHING is checked.

    Read the article again.

    There is no fixing this.

You might have caught the article that was for windows 2000 I accidently posted.

So yes, 4 kittens went under the axe tonight :p

    At the bottom:

Look carefully. It says change any read only attributes using attrib, but it never says it will remove the checkmark.

    The checkmark is irrelevant.
