I've had this message on screen, alternating with "Installing update 2 of 2.." for well over 6 hours now!

How long can it take? At some point I'm gonna have to bite the bullet - what should I do?

(Windows XP, SP3. I think the Windows update is something to do with the .NET framework?)

If you have got an XP install disc to do a recovery if it goes bad, i'd just hit the reset button, and boot into safemode straight away [press F8 as it is booting] then schedule a chkdsk and restart.

    to schedule chkdsk...

Thanks for your suggestions. I actually left it on overnight and to my surprise it had shutdown by morning! After 15+ hours it did actually shutdown all by itself!

But it hadn't actually installed the necessary update, it had literally given up! Checking \windows\windowsupdate.log kinda reveals what happened...

So the machine didn't really do anything after the first few minutes of install/shutdown, until it literally gave up almost 15 hours later! *sigh*

It was trying to install 2 updates during shutdown, the second of which it seemed to have a problem. Having turned the machine back on, the "Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update for .NET versions 2.0 through 3.5 (KB951847) x86" (notified about previously) still needed to be installed, at which point I installed it manually and all done OK in about 5 or 10 mins.

    HI w3d

Yeah that update has caused issues on some PC and not on others, no idea what a common factor could be but you did what I would have suggested in installing it manually.

It looks like a moderator has split the original thread since we were off topic, the new thread is here...
