    Hi guys,

I'm having a heck of a time with this one. I have three computers (one Vista, one XP SP3, and one XP SP2). I got fed up with the headaches so on my office computer I took out the harddrive, installed a drive that has never been in a computer (was in my PVR). I installed XP (with SP2), MS Office, Avast & the nec drivers I needed. After putting IE8 and trying it I found I already have the same virus/malware (I'm suspecting the problem resides in the USB stick I'm using to put the drivers on).

I ran Spybot S&D, defogger & SAS (fixing when given the option).

I loaded Malwarebytes but was not able to update (I tried uninstalling, disable avast, run mb clear, reboot & reinstall - still wont update) - I performed the scan anyways (see log). The error I received was:
    MBAM_ERROR_UPDATING (12007,0,WinHttpSendRequest).

I ran MG Tools and received the following error:
The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000135)

I ran Housecall and it found one problem:
    cmdow.exe Adware .0737EEDD

I also ran DSS Kill - nothing was found.

If anyone has any other ideas on what to try I'd really appreciate it.
    Thanks in advance

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Other than what has already been fixed, your logs are clean. If you are still having redirects, you may have had one of the forms of DNS hijackers that got into your router. So if you have a router hooked up then you need to follow the instructions for your hardware and reset it to factory default settings. Normally there is a recessed push button type switch that needs to be held down for some number of seconds to do this. After resetting to factory defaults on your router, you will need to reconfigure the router for your network if you have made any changes to the default network setup.

    See if that helps.

Thanks chaslang I can't believe that I hadn't thought of the router. It took a firmware update but that finally fixed the problem. Thanks for all your help!

You're welcome. I'm happy to hear you have it fixed.

Make sure that you now have access to your router password protected.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

I just got back from holidays and found your message. I've gone ahead and done as you recommended.

    Thanks again
