\windows\system32\config\system

    This is the second time i have run into this problem.

    I completed an automatic update for windows XP 8-14-07. when prompted to reboot i did. system would not restart. being that this is not my main system i restored from cd but lost my pst files.

    But a friend called me last night said she was working on her pc decided to take a break and eat dinner when she returned her screen was blank. i brought over another monitor and found the same thing had happened to her. this system is a pentium 4 running windows XP Pro. I am getting the following message when i try to use the last good configuration "\windows\system32\config\system".

    Something is wrong with the latest XP update. Can anyone help?

    already tried this:

    md tmp
    copy c:\windows\system32\config\system c:\windows\tmp\system.bak
    copy c:\windows\system32\config\software c:\windows\tmp\software.bak
    copy c:\windows\system32\config\sam c:\windows\tmp\sam.bak
    copy c:\windows\system32\config\security c:\windows\tmp\security.bak
    copy c:\windows\system32\config\default c:\windows\tmp\default.bak

    delete c:\windows\system32\config\system
    delete c:\windows\system32\config\software
    delete c:\windows\system32\config\sam
    delete c:\windows\system32\config\security
    delete c:\windows\system32\config\default

    copy c:\windows\repair\system c:\windows\system32\config\system
    copy c:\windows\repair\software c:\windows\system32\config\software
    copy c:\windows\repair\sam c:\windows\system32\config\sam
    copy c:\windows\repair\security c:\windows\system32\config\security
    copy c:\windows\repair\default c:\windows\system32\config\default

    i receive a message that "the system cannot find the file specified"

    On which file?

    Did you note the warnings in the article?

    Major changes from retail to OEM is the system hive has been renamed to system.bak in the repair folder.

    There are other risks, but no way to avoid them. Its at your own risk.

    On which file? both the system file and the software file

    Did you note the warnings in the article? yes but i donot see any evidence that thisversion is password protected. but to be sure how can i tell for sure?

    i just checked the microsoft website forum and found a post explaining that this is because of update KB921503. but so far no explaination of how to fix this.

    The fix remains the same, as it still boils down to a corrupt registry.
