    Hi,

I performed all the steps in the "clean your computer" tutorial post. So far, I haven't had any pop-ups (which was my original problem), but I'm still having a problem.

Edited to add: The pop-ups have returned!!!!

After I rebooted to normal mode, Norton picked-up a file called Trojan Cmapp. I got rid of that. Then I re-ran Spybot, and found that some of the files I'd deleted in safeboot had returned. The ones that originally came back are:

    AbetterInternet.Aurora
    Abetterinternet
    CoolWWWSearch.Aboutblank
    HotsearchBar
    IE Plugin
    PSGuard.msmsgs
    ShopAtHome

Spybot deleted them, and I then ran Spybot again, this time the following files returned:

    AbetterInternet.Aurora
    Abetterinternet
    PSGuard.msmsgs

How do I make these go away, and stay away? Thanks.

    Please follow the steps below:

    - download Nail/Bolder/Aurora Remover 0.3.1 Beta and save it to its own folder like c:\ABIremover

    - Now extract the abiremover.exe file from the ZIP file into the folder you created but do not run the EXE yet. We will run it later.

    - Download SmitRem but do not run yet!

    - Boot into safe mode

    - Run smitRem.exe and follow the prompts. It will create a log at C:\smitfiles.txt Please attach it to your next message later when you return.

    - Now while still in safe mode and run the abiremover.exe but make sure you are physically disconnected from the internet (unplug your cable to be sure). Just click install, wait (explorer window will disapear)

    - When abiremover finishes just reboot into normal and continue with the below steps.

Download HOSTER and then follow the below steps.
    • Unzip Hoster to a convenient folder such as C:\Hoster
    • Run Hoster.exe, click Restore Original Hosts and then click OK.
    • Click the X to exit the program

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps below:

    - Download HijackThis 1.99.1

    - Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

    - Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file.

    - Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

    - Run HijackThis and save your log file.

    - Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next message. (Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post).

I did everything listed, but it didn't work. So, I'm going to attach the HijackThis log. Thanks for taking time to help.

You did not run ALL the steps in the READ ME FIRST as required please complete ALL the steps including the online scanners.

Look for SurfAccuracy in Add/Remove Programs and uninstall if found.

Print or save these instructions locally because you must be offline and have no other Windows (like browsers or anything else running) before continuing.

    - Click Start > Run and type: cmd and then click OK! This brings up a command prompt window.

Now leave the command prompt Window open and bring up Windows Task Manager by pressing CTRL-SHIFT-ESC simultaneously. Do not be alarmed when you see you Desktop (icons etc)disappear when you do the next steps. Do not close Task Manager until I tell you to do so.

-Now locate explorer.exe in the Process list and right click on it and select End Process

You should now only have two Windows showing Task Manager and the command prompt.

    - At the command prompt opens, type the below commands each follow by the enter key. Take note of what happens with each one and tell me about it later when you come back here:
    nail.exe /FullRemove
    cd c:\windows
    attrib -r -s -h nail.exe
    del nail.exe
exit <--- this will close the command prompt window

Now go back to Task Manager and click File, and select New Task (Run....). Enter explorer.exe into the popup and click OK. This should bring back your Desktop.

Now get back online and come back here and tell me what happened.

You can close Task Manager now if your Desktop came back okay. If it did not come back, just reboot your PC now.

Then post a new HJT log.

Do you know what these next three lines are for??? Locate the toolbar and see what it is.

You're right, I didn't do the online scans. I'll do them now. The files you posted belong to Broadgun PDF Machine. It's makes PDF files from different programs like Word or Notepad.

Don't forget the smitfiles.txt attachment. Also re-read the below message. I added more to it and I'm not sure if you saw all of it.

Ok, if I missed any steps at all, it was totally unintentional. I attached the two files this time too. Forgot to give the other info:

nail.exe/fullremove - that file wasn't recognized as anything
    attrib -r -s -h nail.exe - file not found
del nail.exe - no file found

Click on Start, then Run ... type services.msc into the box that opens up, and press 'OK'.
On the page that opens, scroll down to Windows Overlay Components Then right click the entry, select 'Properties' and press 'Stop Service'. When it shows that it is stopped, next please set the 'Start-up Type' to 'Disabled'. Press 'OK' until you get back to Windows.

Now repeat the above for: CWShredder Service

Next, open up HJT, but instead of scanning, click on the "None of the above, just start the program" button at the bottom of the choices. At the lower right, click on the 'Config" button, and then the Misc tools' button ... select 'Delete an NT Service" ... copy/paste the following into the box that opens, and press "OK":

    Windows Overlay Components

Now repeat using HijackThis to delete this service too: CWShredder Service

Now exit HijackThis. It will probably tell you that you need to reboot to complete this fix. Do not reboot yet. We will reboot later.

If you are using WinXP or WinMe, make sure you have system restore disabled (per the tutorial).
For all OS types, make sure viewing of hidden files is enabled (per the tutorial).

Please run HijackThis and click on the "Open the Misc Tools Section" button on the open page. Then select "Open process manager" on the left-hand side. Look for the following process (or processes) and one at a time kill them by selecting it and then click "Kill process". Then click yes.

    C:\WINDOWS\jiwvnvw.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\dinst.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\msyiyvo.EXE
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\dun.exe

After killing all the above processes, click "Back".

Then please click "Scan" and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Boot into safe mode and use Windows Explorer to delete:
    C:\WINDOWS\jiwvnvw.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\dinst.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\msyiyvo.EXE
    C:\WINDOWS\dsr.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\dun.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\PreUninstallQL.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\pkshimec.dll

If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. If it is, uncheck it and try again. Other wise open Task Manager and kill the process if running then delete the file.

Now run Ccleaner (installed while running the READ ME FIRST). Now if running Win XP goto c:\windows\Prefetch and delete all files in this folder.

Now we need to Reset Web Settings:
    1) If you have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, goto step 2. If not, skip to step 3.
    2) Now right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK. Then skip step 3.
    3) If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.

Now reboot in normal mode and post a new HJT log. And tell us how things are working.

Ok. Things seem to be working fine. The computer is much faster than it was earlier, and no pop-ups. Thanks a million for all your assistance. I'm attaching the new HighJack This log.

Did forget to have HJT fix this one or did it come back?

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [pshower] C:\WINDOWS\system32\pshwr.exe

Also delete the file after booting in safe mode. Then boot normal mode and make sure it is gone. Let me know.

    You're welcome!
