Has anyone had any problems with any of the windows updates for xp. Seems I remember reading a while back that one of the updates was slowing down the os. Guess I havn't done mine for a while 15 updates available. Thanks

if you read the description to see whether its applicable, then you are less likley to get big slowdowns (possiably)

And yes, they made a service pack for their service pack ;)

I find that your PC runs a lot quicker without the unnececary updates on it. Especially the ones you can "add/remove" because that generally incicates that its optional.

Make sure you get the DCOM update tho, since so far ive found 6 people who havnt and are very vunerable!

I used to be just like Brian C and Raider until I found several failed login audits in my Event Viewer... 'course, I think that's because I was galivanting around the internet without a firewall. Oops. I don't think of it as a waste of time anymore. Some of the vulnerabilities that those updates fix can be exploited in some pretty scary ways. Someone would, of course, require the knowledge to do such a thing, but still... I don't like to gamble like that

I'm definately not condoning my behavior, as far as updates go. But, a certain amout of geekyness, is prob the best security. From day one, I insalled a firewall and anti-virus program on my computer, BEFORE a phone line even went NEAR the modem. Anti-Virus automaticly checks for updates everytime I'm online. About once ever hour actually. I test my firewall every few days, with the Norton security online scan. I do a full system scan for viruses weekly. I clear my temp files before I shut down, EVERY DAY. I also occasionally visit third party sites like HackerWatch.org and have them probe my computer, to make sure all my ports are stealthed. I run Ad-Aware every two days(the new version is SO fast ! ) All my "stuff" is backed up to CDs regularly, and I can reformat at any time, without losing any of my files. All my unused services are disabled. The only thing that concerned me enough to take action on, was the vulnerability in the "XP help center" issue. And I handled that by simply renaming something, instead of downloading servicePATCH 1 << LOL I have an alert bar, that tells me if someone is probing, and tells me each time a service is accessing the internet.. Yes, there's still a risk. But my system is as fast.........actually faster than the day I bought it. So the risk I take !! But to anyone that isn't a stickler about security, or isn't prepared to reformat immediately.............They should indeed download each and every security patch. AMEN !!!!

Are you referring to SP1a? Because the only difference between SP1 and Sp1a is that the MS JVM has been removed due to the whole lawsuit deal with with Sun.

The Justice department ordered it to be removed, and they released SP1a for that reason only.

Thanks everyone. Yes I know that some of them I don't need so I will pick and choose what I think I need. Just thought I would check for the buggers. I thought I remembered that there was a bad one a while back. If that is the only difference between sp1 and 1a I probably will not do that one either. No sense in overfeeding the beast it may get indegestion. Best to check first.

One major problem (of 2 that I had) was with a driver update for an HP Pavilion video card. It screwed up my video display big time! I installed the reference drivers from nvidia to fix it.
I actually got a real person from M/S to email me about
this one! They pulled and fixed that one pretty quick (probably since it was a "mainstream consumer system" (ie - gonna be lotsa complaints from users!)

The other was Media Player 9. It would change all my IE settings and wouldn't autoplay links off the Internet - a fresh reinstall and refusal to add MP9 was my cure for it.

I agree with Goldfish...ya gots ta read the description before installing anything!!!!! And, if it ain't broke it don't need fixin!

Yep. Most of what Microsoft offers is with good intentions, I guess but I've never downloaded any drivers they have available... even though Microsoft highly recommends not using any others besides the ones they offer, I still get mine from the actual vendor. I have Nvidia video card, so I go to NVidia web site to get my drivers... only makes sense.

Microsoft says that the drivers that they have available for download have been tested and have passed compatibility tests and blah blah, and if you go to download straight from the vendor, a warning pops up when you try to install the driver. Like 44.03 version NVidia driver (I think) gives me a warning message saying "Microsoft highly recommends that you not install this driver... blah blah... hasn't passed compatibility tests... blah blah..." Ahhh... bologna. Always download from the vendor and you'll be fine. I installed the driver Microsoft "highly recommended" not to install and have had no troubles since.

XP came with the background called Bliss and there is also a screensaver you can download.

Compared to 98, XP is Bliss.

I wont refute this claim because I am not 100% sure, but where did you hear this?

Working for MS, well under an outsourcer for MS, I've heard nothing of this.

    Got a link?
