    Hey all,

I'm having a hard time having Firefox open links in my email. I used to use MyIE but uninstalled it after many posts here, but I thought I set everything to refer to the 'default' which is now Firefox (downloaded from MG). I went into folder options>file types and then adjusted the two that were Internet Shortcuts.

(NONE) Internet Shortcut opens with Rundll32exe shdocvw.dll, OpenURL %l

URL Internet Shortcut opens with Firefoxexe

Did I set this up right? When I click on URL links in my emails, nothing happens. Please set me straight!

    Thanks, Stephanie

go back to file types.. find the one under (NONE) that says URL: Hypertext Transfer Protocol and click on advanced.. then open.. edit.. and uncheck the box that says "use DDE".. then apply .. close windows explorer and try your links now.

2 things I discovered going back there. When I changed the URL Internet Shortcut to Open with Firefox, the (NONE) Internet Shortcut automatically changed to Open with Firefox when in the Edit section. However, in the File Types, if you just highlight the (NONE) I.S., it doesn't have anything listed, whereas the URL I.S. says "Opens with Firefox" Does this make sense?

In any case, I unchecked the DDE and the links still didn't work. But I noticed when I reopened them, it had DDE checked again. It seems to revert to that for some reason.

Have I given you any insight? Should I just make everything open with the "Rundll32.exe" and if so, what will my URL's open with?? THanks Kodo and anyone else out there.

it will check itself again, that's normal. but you want to edit the OPEN properties, not the EDIT properties to not use DDE.. then it will apply FF to DDE when you close out.

I did this and still nothing happens when I click on the link. Everything is set as though it should work. Is there a way I can start all over again? I can't imagine not being able to open up links forever. Let me know if you have any ideas.

    Thanks so much. Stephanie

I SO want to do a screenshot for you, but don't know how. I'll do a search here and see if I can find out, but if it's easy to explain, can you please let me know? Thanks, Kodo.

Kodo, I believe my screenshots will shed light on things. I have not adjusted (none) URL Hypertext Transfer Protocol, only the Internet Shortcuts and URL that I have included here via screenshot. WHen I tried to go on the one in your screenshot, when I clicked on Advanced - nothing happened. I'm sending you 3 different ones.

Give me a moment. My pics are too big...need to change the size. I don't see the "Open" option as you stated so I went to "Attach Files" and did it that way - which is why it's saying it's too big. If you want me to do it your way - where's the "Open" option that you're talking about? I tried to "Insert Pic" but my pics are .bmp and not http//s.

  11. Kodo

    Kodo SNATCHSQUATCH

those are not going to do it.. you need to do it to the (NONE) Hyptertext Transfer Protocol.

Look at picture 2 that I posted. the highlited blue text says "open" .. it's an action assigned to the application not an action that you take.. You select the option "open" and then you press "EDIT".

HA HA HA!!! Okay, this whole time I thought you were asking ME to send YOU screenshots. I thought the "open" was re: attaching screenshots for you.

Okay, so I did as your screenshot said. And still no go. However, I NEVER fussed with this file before - and I've altered many things in the previously mentioned two files...so perhaps I messed things up because of that? I'll go look at them and see what's going on.

    Go to file types..

reset the URL type for internet explorer by hitting reset.
    Then try it.

I cannot find a URL for Internet Explorer. Perhaps that's the problem?

  18. Kodo

    Kodo SNATCHSQUATCH

    eek.. no..

go to file types. find URL Internet Shortcut.. the url extension should be reset. Look to the bottom right of the box when you select it, it should say RESTORE.

  19. SRBast

    SRBast Specialist

Yes, I understand now. Kodo, if you look at the screenshots I sent you, you'll notice that this particular file no longer has the "Restore" available. I remember it used to, but now it just has "CHange" and "Advanced"

hit change and it should offer you a recommended option of SHELL DOC OBJECT CONTROL LIBRARY

I don't get that as an option. I tried going into "browse" and entered it there in "all files" but it said that it's an invalid file. Should I delete this file completely and create a "New" one?

    we're going to reset it

download this file. Rename it from urlback.txt to urlback.reg ..yes to all prompts to change file extension

go to start.. run.. type RegEdit and hit enter

now go to the my computer icon at the top the regedit window, then file-->export

call it MYBACKUPREGISTRY , give it a location and REMEMBER IT then hit SAVE. That backs up your registry should anything go amiss.

Now, doubleclick on the URLBACK.REG file and say yes to the prompt.. now look at your file association for URL ( for kicks, try out a link too)

Kodo, wondering if you're there and can get back to me. I'm trying to rename the urlback.txt to urlback.reg and there were no prompts for a file ext. change. It just renamed it as "urlback.reg.txt" So it's still a .txt. Is there any other way to rename it than right clicking > rename?

So it still didn't open any links.

I clicked on many different links within my emails. If it is a link like MGs to go to the thread, or a link that I sent myself - it won't open. If it's an advertisement (like Shutterfly) I am able to click on their page and it opens a window in Firefox for me.

Here are the following changes to the files:

(none) URL: File Transfer Protocol OPENS WITH FIREFOX

(none) Internet Shortcut OPENS WITH Rundll32.exe shdocvw.dll, OpenURL %1

URL Internet Shortcut OPENS WITH SHELL DOC OBJECT AND CONTROL LIBRARY

    Any thoughts?

what about (none) URL -Hypertext Transfer Protocol

that's the main one right there.

See what rushing will do? Okay, so I only have (None) Hypertext transfer protocol with Privacy. So I went into there - and low and behold - "MYIE" was there. So I highlighted it, Clicked REMOVE and edit the "open" so that Firefox was the program used. And still no good! Why wouldn't that work??? S.

put the mouse down... you're getting ahead of yourself. DON'T remove them..

    download this

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4370.html

install it. Open it up and choose OPERA/OTHER then click on preferences button and make sure all boxes are checked. Then browse for the firefox EXE.
this should set it for you. Then try the links.. if no go, then NOW look for (NONE) URL-Hypertext transfer protocol and it should be set to open with firefox.. Uncheck use DDE and OK it.

    Try this...

I had the same problem but the following worked.

Go into Explorer and go to Folder..Tools..Folder Options..File Types.

Select NO Extension and manually change your http, https, gopher and other protocols to the desired browser.

    Details are here: http://www.slipstick.com/problems/firefox.htm

    Cheers!
