Defragmenters - no good solution?

How do you choose your defragmenter? I'm in doubt there's a good solution. I definitely don't like Diskeeper (http://diskeeper.com) since it requires a lot of time and a lot of free space. I tried to schedule it every night but didn't noticed something changed comparing from the time when there were no defragging process at night.

I'm also in doubt if it makes sense to use whole-disk defragmenters. What kind of defragmenters do you use and why? I've tried to compare O&O defrag (http://oo-software.com/) and DefragMentor Premium (http://defragmentor.com) and can't say I'm sure one is better. The second one is significantly quicker since it is file defragmenter, but I'm in doubt that I can guess the files to defragment which will noticeable increase overall system performane. And it still requires a lot of contiguous free space to defragment large files.

So could anybody say me what product to buy? Or maybe you can claim that defragmenters is waste of time and money?

    Yuse:

I use the WinXP HE bundled defragger but only in Safe Mode.
Fast and thorough enough for me.

The native disk defragmentor is extremely rudimentary. Some don't need or want any more than that.. which is fine. Some want more.. You want a defragmentor that defrags the MFT first and foremost. The MFT is basically a file index and it may actually hold small files in it. Defragging this can increase boot and program load times.

A defragmentor that allows you to sort by access date is nice too. It brings your most used files to the front of the drive.
