Slow Ms Word Response In Window Xp

Takes over 60 seconds to display any MS Word document in "My Documents"
after double clicking - Used to display in a couple of seconds. Tried reinstalling MS Word and MS Works, but no help. Don't think it's related, but I
recently installed an old publisher package titled "Quark". All other responses
such as photos from "My Pictures" or access to Outlook Express & Internet Explorer via Roadrunner are still almost instantaneous. Clicking on MS Word
to generate a NEW document takes over 30 seconds to display the blank
MS Word page. Any ideas?

Answer on memory/speed questions: 2.4 GB CPU (one year old Gateway 500 S Plus), aprxmtly 82 GB hard drive with 72 GB free space, 256 mb RAM.

Forgot to mention that double clicking on saved spreadsheet documents in "My Documents" gives almost instant display. Only MS Word documents in "My Documents" take the long (over one minute) time to display.

Haven't yet tried "safe" mode, but will do so. Interesting that the spreadsheets appear swiftly, but not the Word documents. Again, problem
just appeared in last couple of days.

Operating in "Safe" mode gives normal display speed for MS Word. What's
the next troubleshooting step? Went back & forth between "Normal" and
"Safe" operation a couple of times. Results were consistent: Too slow in
"Normal" and OK in "Safe"

Thanks for the "Does it work in Safe Mode" question. Answer was yes. Then
tried powering down & disconnecting cable access(at router) which fixed problem. Powered down & reconnected to cable & all operation is now normal.
Previous attempts at simply powering down computer had not helped.

Safe mode OK operation was the clue, but I wonder why cable access was
slowing down MS Word but not impacting any other computer access speeds?

 

Just a guess, are there any Web features enabled in MS Word, including Word Help?
