    Hi

I did some cleaning up of my computer recently after seeing that it was running very sluggishly. Removed some unnecessary programs and installed Avira Av, MalwareBytes Antimalware & Super AntiSpyware. Followed Avira, MBAM and SAS to remove whatever showed up. There were a few items initially. Now I'm wondering if I got it all.

Went through the Read & Run 1st post and the Cleaning post for Windows XP. I could not get Root Repeal to run. It hangs at the initialization screen. This is not the first time I had problems with it. Before seeing the Read & Run 1st post on this site, I had downloaded it before after seeing a recommendation somewhere else about its usefulness. I tried running it then and it hanged then too. I got some kind of virtual memory error message then. After reading the Read & Run post, I re-downloaded Root Repeal and followed the directions in the post and it still did not run.

Attached are the logs for the other programs.

I am not seeing any malware in your logs.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real-time protection. They are useful as backup scanners. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore ato create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Thank you for the response. I'm just worried that I was not able to run Root Repeal. Everytime I did, it would freeze at the initialization screen and I would need to go into windows task manager to shut it down. The computer then would freeze and I couldn't even turn it off w/ ctrl-alt-del. I had heard that rootkits are able to detect these type programs and interfere with them running. Are there alternative scanners that I can try? I've heard mention about GMER. Is this a helpful program? Thanks again.

GMER is a good program, but you have to be careful that you get some false positives as with any program. Your Combo log also checks for rootkits using gmer. It just isn't that unusual for RootRepeal to run. It fails on numerous systems that are clean. :)
