    Hi guys

Does anybody know why Chrome is using so much memory?? My computer is seriously overheating and the fan is going crazy

Literally over a Gig, its been progressively going up over the past months. I dont think there is a malware issue as i have not experienced any other problems, but i will run the scans on the malware page just to be sure.

I will put screen shots of my comp and the memory usage as an attachment

    Cheers

Well it's your Facebook tab that is using most of it. What happens with that closed? How did you get pic 2 btw? I've never seen that before.

@Earthling the Chrome Task Manager is accessed via right click top bar or shift+esc

Thanks David. Ages since I used Chrome and don't have it installed - so that explains why I've never seen it! ;)

I have chrome for testing, its a useful tool the app task manager, think more browsers should have one.

Can't argue with that - pic 2 immediately pinpoints the OP's problem. Don't think you can do that in Firefox.

You can right click on chrome on the taskbar as well to get Chrome Task Manager.

Is it ever normal for one browser tab (even Facebook) to gobble up 1.2 GB of memory?
I didn't think that was even possible.

    Why wouldn't it be possible?

OK, that was a dumb question. Obviously it's possible; the OP's pic #2 proves that. Looking at it from the standpoint of the OP, who I assume wants to continue using Facebook, I would want to know if it's normal for a single tab to use up that much memory. And if not, why is it happening and how does one fix it.

Personally, I've never used Facebook or Chrome but I've loaded some pretty massive web pages with Firefox and have never seen that kind of memory usage from the app.

If playing a game or multimedia on it, absolutely.

There is a disconnect these days where everyone assumes that website = a page of information. In many cases, that is far from the truth. Today's websites are more accurately described as web applications. They are literally programs running in your browser. They have to load somewhere, and its not on your hard drive or SSD.

    Hey guys

    Sorry about the late reply,

No i didnt have loads of tabs open, but even if i did then it wouldnt explain why facebook was drinking 1.2gb would it?

I decided to use today as an experiment to see if it did it again and facebook is currently at about 950,000K so not quite as high but still high for a site that has no gifs, no vids running, and no ads showing.

I just dont get it, i closed chrome down last night and experimented with Explorer and although that is laggy the usage was about 300,000k granted this was for a shorter period of time.

I have read that cause chrome is so quick they off set this speed somehow with more RAM usage but i am not familiar with the technicalities so not sure if it is true.
I just dont know what the issue is, a lot of people are blaming facebook so maybe its them and not my system

I might be forced to use IE again :( noooo

So no one have any ideas?? lol

IE will probably use just as much.

Personally, I don't see the problem. I understand that fb is using 1 GB of RAM and you wouldn't like it too, and as Adrynalyne said, web pages/web apps will use resources on what you are running on them.

My point is in your 3rd pic, it shows you have 6 GBs of RAM installed you can use 4 GBs of that and still be more than fine for the OS. Why wonder about conserving?

    Let the beast loose!

I had 600mb being used just idling on some forums yesterday.

Well i tried just using IE last night and it was going ok, with youtube and facebook running they were pulling in about 700,000k, then it crashed and i had to reset my comp lol damn you IE.

Yeah i guess i will just have to put up with it, it just worries me as my comp gets really hot and the fan works overtime to cool it.

I will keep an eye on it and may return

    Cheers guys

How are you judging 'hot'? If it's just a feeling then you could install Speccy and take the guesswork out of it.

it is very hot to the touch, particularly on the mouse pad and round the vents

never heard of speccy will give it a squizz

    cheers

Have you made sure the vents are not obstructed or the fans choked with dust?

Whatever is causing the excess heat, I think it's safe to say that it has nothing to do with your Chrome related memory woes.

When you run Speccy, click on CPU, Motherboard, and Storage items from the list on the left and note the reported temp for each hardware component. If you are indeed overheating, that should provide some insight into where it's coming from.

You know, I too completely missed your overheating problem in your OP. Overheating has nothing to do with ram usage.

Check air flow, vents, fans, heat sinks. And in speccy, in addition to what rustysavage mentioned, check your video card temp as well, if you have one.

    Hey guys

I got a pic of the heating issue (see attachment :) )

Happens a lot when youtube is running, i expect that the temp would rise cause of this.

It seems to be the motherboard which gets hot, the highest i saw was 87% but i think it is rare that it gets that high. I managed to get a screen shot of it at 82%, this combines with a graphics card that heats up into the high 70s is whats causing the overheating.
Not sure what it is, maybe dell just built a shit comp.

I have checked the vents etc and cant see an issue as of yet but thats an on the outside, kind of reluctant to open it up at the min as i struggle to get one screw out and its really thinned the screw top.
I will try and get some compressed air and give it a toot into the vents

That's pretty hot. I would blow out the radiator, vent holes, and keyboard with compressed air if it's a laptop, or take the cover off it and blow everything clean if it's a tower. No more than 50#, or use a can of compressed air, and if you can pin the fan(s) from spinning while doing it, do so. If it's a laptop the temps are especially important, as your video chip could be at stake.

As far as facebook, icons from apps such as farmville use a lot of ram. You can conserve ram by literally placing the "animals" out of sight in a barn. Or disable the FB games you don't need.
