desktop will not boot properly

I am having an issue with my desktop not starting up. When i power it up, the screen will show the XP icon and the load bar, but then it goes to a black screen with a blinking cursor for minutes at a time before going to the user selection screen. Not really sure what exactly is going on and was hoping that somebody may have had this issue once and has some helpful information. Thanks ahead for anything that may help.
