    Hi,

According to Combofix, I have the subject infection:

Warning: possible MBR rootkit infection !
    user & kernel MBR OK
copy of MBR has been found in sector 0x0DF83CBD
    malicious code @ sector 0x0DF83CC0 !
PE file found in sector at 0x0DF83CD6 !

Otherwise, the computer seems to be working OK.

Will attach the requested logs to this and the next posting.
Note that the Rootrevel log is a bit fouled.

Please advise whether this is a real infection or just a ghost and if real, what to do to remove.

    Thanks for any help.
    Fred

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Yes that is likely because you are running Daemon Tools and you skipped step 6 of the READ & RUN ME which warned you not to skip that step.

So if you want to know for sure then complete step 6 and then rerun ComboFix and MGtools and attach new logs. You could have save a bunch of time by not skipping this step to begin with. ;)

My humble appologies kind sir. Did not realize Daemon tools was so persistent.

    New logs are attached.

    THanks for your help.

Based on your logs, this infection ( which is likely false) is still showing and that is because of Daemon Tools still being active even though you attempted to disable it. It is a real pain in the rear. It never uninstalls properly and it frequently will not disable.

In order to determine if your infection is real or not, we will need to forcefully remove the drivers for it which means you will have to reinstall it again once we are completely finished. That is if you still wish to have this on your PC knowing the potential issues it could cause.

Do you wish to proceed with removing it?

If you answered yes to this, then continue with the below.

Please delete MGtools from the below location. It does not belong here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Security Stuff\MGtools.exe

    Uninstall the below software:
Viewpoint Media Player (Remove Only) <-- should have been uninstalled in step 5 of the READ ME

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    O2 - BHO: AcroIEToolbarHelper Class - {AE7CD045-E861-484f-8273-0445EE161910} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: Google Toolbar Notifier BHO - {AF69DE43-7D58-4638-B6FA-CE66B5AD205D} - (no file)
    O3 - Toolbar: Adobe PDF - {47833539-D0C5-4125-9FA8-0819E2EAAC93} - (no file)
    O18 - Protocol: qbwc - {FC598A64-626C-4447-85B8-53150405FD57} - mscoree.dll (file missing)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Yes, I do wish to continue. Thanks for your help.

I attempted to complete step 5 as instructed in the README. Viewpoint Media Player DID NOT does NOT appear in the "Add or Remove Programs" dialog. Nor does it appear as a folder by the name of "Viewpoint *" or "Media *" in the Program Files folder, nor does it show up after a complete C: drive search for the word "iewpoint".

There are however several folders named "Media Player" within the "Documents and Settings" folder tree in either the "Application Data\Microsoft" or "Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft". Are any of these the Viewpoint Media Player to which you refer?

    Thanks,
    Fred

    Hi,

The extra copy of MGtools was deleted.

The "Viewpoint Media Player" only existed as a couple of obsolete registry keys, which I deleted.

Deleted the listed entries using HijackThis

Ran Combofix using the listed script, however - while it was running, it rebooted the machine and then resumed running. During the report generation phase, the Windows security monitor AND my usual AV software both initiated contrary to the listed instruction to not run anything while combo fix was active. Don't know whether this caused any trouble...

    Attaching requested logs.

    Thanks,
    Fred
