"AVG has detected a Virus: "Java Byteve"

My Grandson picked up a virus evidently. He is the only other user on this xp home sp1 system.

I read your virus removal section and am prepared to do the things suggested. Although I have already done most of them. I have not rebooted yet.

I currently have a good suite of spyware tools and services running. I run the free version of AVG and Sygate personal firewall.

I have long ago deleted MS java.

AVG and Housecall (on line) say they can not remove or clean because files are in use. eight files infected (8)

The one Identified by House Call is:

c:\document and settings\bubba\application data\sun\java\deployment\catchejava\v1.0\jar\webcounter.jar-23e87f56-1df53e20.zip

I looked in process but can't readily identify any Sun Java processes. I am over my head here.

If anyone could tell me how to kill the process using these files, mabye AVG or House call could clean these eight files.

boot to safe mode

go to this directory
c:\document and settings\bubba\application data\sun\java\deployment\catchejava\v1.0\jar

and delete everything in it.

 

Thanks for your reply. I did as you suggested and re-ran AVG and Housecall. Both reported no virus present.
