My razr is starting to give me problems so I think I'll be in the market for a new cell phone in the very near future. I'd consider just getting another Razr but I wanted to see if there was anything else out there that might be better. I don't need any fancy apps or anything. I just use my phone to talk, not play games, text, IM, or whatever. A nice built in camera with some decent storage and crisp display would be a plus however. I want to go as small and light as possible. With the iPhone completely out of the question, does anyone have any suggestions?

Just focusing on your current phone, is it a black razr?

Yup, a black razr v3c. The size is perfect but I wouldn't mind a better camera and display. I can go without email, text, music, etc. Nokia makes some really nice phones, but I don't think I can get some of the better models for Cingular.

The day my upgrade comes, Im gonna see just how many times my razr will skip across a lake.

    I hate this thing.

I hated my razr, good camera, slim design, but thought phone quality sucked, only went to 7 for volume, if it went to 10, that would have helped. Wife feels the same way. I think I should have just bought the cheapest phone with a decent camera, so consider that. This months Maximum PC reviewed some phones, other online reviews are available. I bought a Nokia e62 after research and now I hate it. Too big, the "joystick" dials when its in my pocket, etc., so its a real crap shoot even after researching. Good luck!

Black razr guys......if you call tech support they will tell you they are crap because they are black roflmao. They buzz badly and have awful reception and razr are balming the paint job. This is what my son was told about his when he called as it is still under warranty. They will not honor it.

Get a nice girlie pink one and you'll be fine ;)

I know what you guys mean. I already replaced it under warranty because the keypad locked up and there was a very annoying buzzing sound when ever I made a call. Now it seems the keypad is locking up on this one as well and in the event it does work, some features freeze the phone up completely. Size wise it's perfect for me, but it has a lot of negative aspects.

With the applied discounts from the company I work at, I can get a Nokia n75 for a pretty reasonable price. If it lasted me two years I'd be happy camper. Plus the phone really is a piece of art. I want to see it in person though.

I'm going to check out some reviews and check out Maximum PC. But all that comes later. I have a 14 page paper to write. :-(

Thanks for the help so far!

The buzz is the exact problem I had with the original one. They honored the warranty but now it's starting to break down on me. My mom has a pink one. It's considerably nicer, but she's starting to have problems with her keypad too. *sigh* And her warranty went out on Mothers Day. :cry

Hum, An iPhone with loads of features I'll never use, or books for an entire semester of school? Tough choice! :D :p It's a sexy looking phone don't get me wrong, but I can't justify that price for looks.

I've always had a Nokia...so long as I ensure it is charged, never had a problem. Still have originals in perfect working order (in case of emergencies gathering dust) and only ever upgraded for size and new personal/business needs.

Well, a Nokia 6300 would be a really nice phone to have. Sadly, Cingular doesn't sell it outright and the phones available to me are junk IMO. If i were to purchase an unlocked Nokia 6300, that means I can just drop in my Sim card and be good to go correct?

And how about this website? Trust it, or don't trust it? I can't find anything about them in Google other than their product pages. They offer a sweet price but I'm thinking it's too good be to true.

I have had nokia, great phone's but i think you pay over the odds compared to other firms.

i now have a Sony Ericsson K750 its got all the bells and whistles and reliable i leave it on 25/7 and recharge normally every 3 days.

my wife has Samsung X830 and she is also content.

i think the problem is personal preference against price and looks, hope you find what you want.[IMG]

Hi Overcooked, (I too only want phone to talk.)
    • Not familiar with the 6300. Mine is a "3120" which caters to my current needs. (Has more features than I use, but may need later (eg can have Network Services if I want to - but don't, so no cost). Like it having hands free speaker though! Handy.)
    • Note: Nokia may have different models for different countries.
    • Re SIM card: I've had the same SIM card for all my phones. Just transferred card whenever upgraded phone without a problem.
    • Re your URL: Not familiar with it. Being in USA, I'ld be inclined to check out http://usa.nokia.com/A4179017 (then check out option for phones). They should also be able to give you a list of retail outlets for purchasing phone (they also compare prices).
    • Down here we have phone service providers who have phone retail outlets (eg Telstra, Optus) with a showroom of phones and staff on hand to speak with. Expect you should have the same where you are(?). That's a good place to go to, for you to see, test, speak with people before buying.
    • FYI. I've never had to use warranty with any of my phones because never had a problem.
    • Current one has automatic keyguard that locks and I can unlock when required. Never had a problem of key pad accidently switching phone from lock to unlock.

    Hope that helps.

    Cheers

    LS

My trouble with Nokia, is the stupid specific head sets. Other than that, I don't mind it. I bought a Motorola, but it was incompatible with the towers in my service area... I bought it no more than fifteen miles away. Tracfone is full of morons.

Yeah...haven't heard many people who like the razr that have them. My contract is up in a month. I'm thinking I'm getting the LG VX8600 or 8700.

Are you referring to the "Boom Headset (HDB-4)? This headset allows you to answer or end calls by pressing the button on the microphone part of the headset and has excellent audio quality.

What I like about my Nokia is the speaker which allows a handsfree conference function for a group of people to listen and respond to caller at the same time.

Thanks for all the information. I stopped by a Cingular store today to see what they carried. They really didn't have anything I was looking for so it looks like I'll be purchasing an unlocked phone from somewhere. I like the Nokia 6300 because it's just as light as my razr and has a 16million color screen. A 2 MP camera verses my razer's 1.3MP. For the price, i'd be very happy if it lasted me two years. I'll post back when I make a decision.

I love my Sony Ericsson z525a.....it does what a phone is meant to....makes calls. It has a built in camera but you can easily ignore that feature. The quality of calls is excellent and you can hear and adjust the volume. Ringtone is plenty loud enough....or so everyone else in my office tells me ;)

And speaking of cellular providers, you Cingular peeps noticed we have been converted to AT&T. They made out it was a blend of the two companies now, but I just took a look at the website to pay my bill, and it is now AT&T all the way including a URL change. Hope this doesn't change the service we have grown to know and love....

I'm gonna buck the trend here, I have had a black RAZR for about the last 13 months and it's been great (maybe a UK/USA thing) However I was due an upgrade and I chose a Motorola RIZR Z3. Well pleased with it and it has a screen that you can see in the sun.

I didn't necessarily mean that, but the fact that Nokia has it's own head sets, with their own jacks. So I can't use my high quality computer headset on it.

But I'll check that one out.

People are saying it will have garbage battery life too.

    Why can't a phone, be a phone?

Exactly! I'm looking for something under $150 that has crystal clear communications, will last me at least two years, and any other features are just a bonus, but I don't want to have to pay extra for all these features I am not going to use.

Just a bit of info. Last night on the news, there were two cell phone caused drownings. One guy dropped his into a drainage ditch and dove in to retrieve and couldn't climb back up the side. Don't remember for sure, exactly how he got into the water but it had to do with his cell phone.

    New iPhone specs:

Up to 5 hours - Talk / Video / Browsing
Up to 16 hours - Audio playback
    (Battery life varies by use)

Better than my fifth gen iPod, but still not enough to justify the cost. :p

Woot! Just bought a Nokia 6300! It was cheaper to get that unlocked online than getting the Nokia n75 from Cingular. Even with the 'discount' pricing...

I have a Samsung T209 flip phone, very basic, bought from Walmart for $60. My boy has the next one up for $90, with camera. They are T-Moble, use a standard Simm Card, and if they break, I just buy a new one. The bottom of the line is $35, basically a brick.

Reception is good, keyboard well lite and stable, does everything I want.
