Windows Update fails

    I am runnin Win XP SP2 and i cant get windows update to work correctly. I am thinking that i have some program running in the background that is not allowing it to install my updates, but i dont know what or why i am not getting notified.
    I have already tried booting in safe mode, but the problem was still there. Does anyone know how to turn off all non-critical programs?
