I have a HDD that I deleted all partitions and formatted it and Microsoft Security Essentials still shows it has Trojan:DOS/Alureon.A.

I don't understand this, there are no files on the drive. I want to use this as a portable HDD but I just can't get rid of this infection. MSSE can't remove it. It says it suspended it and needs to reboot to finish, but after I reboot it's still there.

It doesn't show right away but when I try to access the drive with something like "easy recovery pro" or "Acronis Disk Director Suite" MSSE kicks in and tells me it's infected.

Where could this be hiding? The disk is completely empty!

    What file and file path?

You will need to follow through with the below:

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Pleases follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

    Are you a bot?
you didn't read my email to well.

There are no paths, the hard drive is formatted, there are no files on it. No anything. That's why I'm here, I need to know where it could be.

If I'm not mistaken there is a part of the hard drive that keeps information and tells the PC if there are any bad sectors and where they are. I wonder if that's where this virus could be.

Please let me know when you have actually read my email and we can go from there.

To anyone else reading this thread that might have any ideas. Here is how I know what drive it is.

I have a 320gb laptop HDD I plan on putting in a case to make a portable HDD. I put this on my work PC and used Acronis to delete all partitions and format it then create one partition taking up the whole drive.

When I first plugged the drive in nothing happened, but when I opened Acronis Disk Director I got a pop up from MSSE showing me the information about the virus and that's all it said: Trojan:DOS/Alureon.A

    There is no path.

So, I deleted the partitions and formatted it. Then made one partition taking up the whole drive then rebooted. Once the OS was up and running I started "Easy Recovery Pro" to run a disk diagnoses and make sure the HDD was in good working order. That is when MSSE popped up again. It said it suspended the process and to reboot to remove the virus. the problem is that rebooting did not help, as soon as I run Acronis or ERP the pop up comes up again.

Now, to clear things up a bit. When I take that drive out of the computer I do not get that pop up when running the same programs.

    Maybe that's clearer.
I've never seen anything like this.

No I am not. I am a human who is willing to volunteer my free time and skills towards helping you.

Well perhaps by running the requested scans on the HD we might be able to find out more... If you are not prepared to do that then I cannot even begin to help you. Further more I would run this first and THEN follow the rest of my instructions. Re-adjust your attitude, I am here to help not argue. I have been known to just refuse to offer my assistance to people who are rude. I understand that you are anxious to get this resolved.

Go to TDSSKiller and Download TDSSKiller.zip to your Desktop

    • Extract its contents to your Desktop so that you have TDSSKiller.exe directly on your Desktop and not in any subfolder of the Desktop.
    • Now double click the TDSSkiller.exe file to run it ( if using Vista or Windows 7 do not double click on it but rather, right click and select Run As Administrartor.
    • Allow the application to run and a window will open showing that it is TDSSkiller from Kaspersky
    • Click Start scan
    • It will run rather quickly and will notify you of whether anything is found or not.
    • Follow the instructions to delete/quarantine if asks you what to do when if finds something.
Whether an infection is found or not, a log file should be created on your C: drive ( or whatever drive you boot from) in the root folder named something like TDSSKiller.2.1.1_27.12.2009_14.17.04_log.txt which is based on the program version # and date and time run. Please attach this log to your next reply. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

I have no attitude. I don't know where you get that from. I just asked if you were a bot and said you didn't read my post. How is that having an attitude?

If you read my post, you'd know that the scanners are useless.

You have a bad attitude and this problem is over your head so I don't need your help.

Just close the thread, I'll go elsewhere.

let me clarify, the scanners are useless because there are no files or folders to scan. You accused me of having an attitude and arguing because I said you didn't read my post, but that's the truth, you didn't read my post, or you would know that the scanners are useless.

And let me just clarify. I very much want to help you, but assuming you know best is not always the right way to go, none of us are any wiser until you run our procedures on the HD and run the requested scans. I have reason to believe TDSSKIller might find something, so please run it and let me know the results. If it does not find anything, we can run other scans.

Strange, is it a legit copy of Acronis?

There is also chance that you could have an MBR infection. So to answer your question I DID read your first post, I DID understand what you are saying. Now it's your turn to play ball and help me to help you. If you don't wish to do that we can indeed close the thread at your own request.

I did run TDSSKIller and it only scanned my C: drive. This drive's partition is I:

There should not be a MBR because the drive was deleted of all partitions and completely formatted.

I paid $50 for Acronis DD and don't like the innuendo that I might have stolen it.

I understand you helping people here, I did the same thing for a while, I went through the training from Malware University at malwareremoval.com but just didn't have the time or patients to do what you're doing, so I have to give you credit, it's more than I can do.

I also understand that you can't tell someones attitude through email but you assumed to quick that I had a bad attitude, or you were just too defensive but either way you did not treat me as you should have. But, I do understand that you do run into a lot of jerks and I guess it gets hard to tell the difference. As I said, I couldn't do it.

Aside from that, I think this problem is above you (and me). This is a very unique problem. Someone in another thread suggested I run a program to return it to factory state:
But this is a Toshiba drive and they don't have the utility.

Anyway, that's the way I'm going at this, as a hardware problem not malware.

I never was looking for malware help, I know all that. This is a very unique problem and I was looking for someone that has seen it before.

Here's what I posted in another thread, might give a better understanding what is happening:
So yes, close the thread. I don't need malware help, I need help to wipe the drive clean.
