Today my computer will not boot properly. I get my desktop with no icons and no tasbar or start menu. I get an error "Warning, Cannot access volume control". I can access some programs through the task manager. The computer will boot in safe mode but I could still not solve the problem. The computer hangs when trying to shut down with windows and must be forced into shut down. Please, anyone that can advise on how I should proceed, I would appreciate it.

Problem solved. Windows "boot from last known good configuration" option from the safemode menu did the trick.
