    Hi Guys

I sincerely hope there is someone prepared to help me on a Saturday night (where you are) :(

My VET won't let me update. Tray icon has disappeared. When I try to update in other ways (START menu, desktop etc) it appears to open but then either closes before it will let me click "dnloadupdates" or "options". If I am fast enough to click one of those it simply ignores me. The same has happened with my favourite application software. I have this in a zip file. I have tried unzipping it again, to no avail. I also sometimes have the internet connection changed to "never dial" - if I go in and change it, I'm fine. No funny stuff when I'm accessing or searching the web.

I already had Ad-Aware, Spybot and Spyblaster. Thursday, Spybot found CoolWWWSearch and deleted it. I had had 2 clean runs with it earlier in the week.

I spent all day yesterday running the cleanups. In fact I deleted the above and reinstalled them. Bitdefender found Backdoor.SDbot.C647398c but could not disinfect or delete it. BD found 2 others which it did delete, log attached. Spybot then found All-in-one TELCOM which it deleted. I did not do the optional stuff, since I don't think I'm getting hi-jacked.

Late last night I found Trojan Remover here and ran it - it immediately found a reg change that I let it change back. Log attached.

    I have a Pentium III 1Ghz
    5.00.2195 SP4
    x86 Family 6 Model 8 Stepping IO
    129.520 Kb RAM

    Hope you can help.

    Vicki

I forgot to say STINGER found Qhosts.apd and deleted it. Log attached.

SPYBOT detection update dnload fails - then 33 Surfsidekick errors

    Hi

I posted earlier but no response yet.

So I decided to rerun Spybot, the update for detection files failed, so I did it till it worked - then it found 33 Surfsidekick errors. When Spybot tried to fix them it stopped at 7 with the err msg

"unexpected error in fixing problems (cannot create file C:\WINNT\system32\drivers\etc\hosts. The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process)"

So I started in safe mode and ran Spybot,Ad-aware and Trojan Remover. They ran OK but I still can't open my application software.

I just merge message number 3 back to your original thread. Please stay in one thread for a problem.

Sorry about the delay but it has been very busy here lately and this is the weekend which complicates things too. Don't forget this is a volunteer help forum. We are here quite a bit but cannot be here all the time. And right now some of our helpers are not around (hurricane Katrina problems and other issues).

Please read the announcement and sticky threads. HJT logs should only be posted when requested. Please run the steps below.

    - Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal

Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

    - Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem, boot into normal mode and make sure you follow these directions:

    - Download HijackThis 1.99.1

    - Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

    - Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file.

    - Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

    - Run HijackThis and save your log file.

    - Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next message. (Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post).
