CPU idling program

Does anyone know of a good CPU idling program thats either freeware or not too expensive?

I'm using CPUidlePro right now...but my shareware trial is almost up and its $30! i'd rather buy a new HSF for that price

I just upgraded to a water-cooled system and it works decently, but using an idler brings a significant difference (idles at around 42 degrees celsius with the idler, 50 without)

downside is, when playing a game that heavily utilizes the CPU, it heats right back up to 59 degrees.....stupid water cooled system.

    59c WITH water cooling????

Ummm did you bleed the system? Is the block on OK? Thermal paste?

That is way too warm for water. It is fine for the CPU as others will attest, but with water you should be under 40 at least or cooler depending on the CPU you are using

XP natively supports HLT so you don't need a program to do that.

That's worrying me as well. 40C is pretty hot for a water cooled system.

i'll try bleeding the system to make sure theres no air

at first it wasnt working at ALL to cool the cpu, and then i realized the pressure point of the waterblock needed some modifications to sit directly over the CPU's main core. That done, i used Arctic Silver 3 Thermal Compound, and i reach reasonable IDLE temps....another story when actually using the comp.

I dont know about XP supporting HLT...perhaps it does, but when using CPUIDLEPRO it cools an additional 9 to 11 degrees C. so i see it as worthwhile (though obviously i'd rather get the temps down by fixing hardware issues)

one main complaint i have seen about my cooling system in reviews is that the Radiator mounts inside the case, and is inefficient. They claim that mounting it outside the case provides much better result, however I dont think i have long enough tubing to redo it, and also....it would be annoying having the radiator mounted macgyver-style outside

    WOW

I just downloaded and ran CPUIdle Pro and thought I would play with it...

Normally I run at 43c at full load (F@H going 24/7)

But holy cow.. look at this!![IMG]

    That ROCKS@!

    But wait there is more!!!

    Here are two more pics

Here is MBM shot without CPUIdle running
notice CPU is at 100% Running F@H
    [IMG]

    and check this out!!!
this is with nothing running but CPUIdle
    [IMG]

and NO my sensors are NOT backwards in this shot!!

Not sure, but if you find another one let me know, cuz I just might buy this one!!!

haha will do exeter...btw what hsf do you have going on over there? You're running a 2000+ right? obviously that will be a bit cooler than mine...but still those are gorgeous levels you're reaching there

....i'm positive you could OC that to 2+ ghz without any instability...and THAT would be well worth $30

Running a Tt Volcano 9 and room temp is about 65f = 18c
    XP 2000+
    just at 1700 Mhz
    WOW!

Many AMD mobos have HTL disabled.

On my MSI it was just got enabled in the lastest BIOS update.

Just by updating BIOS + enabling it the temp dropped by 10C or so without using any special program, in Win XP.

How are you guys checking your temps? Do you have extra hardware/software or is it something that is part of the mobo or in XP? I would check mine just to see if I knew where it was..

    I use Motherboard Monitor...
it takes a minute to set up.. and get the sensors. but it works very well.
    MBM 5.2.2.0

    Nice little prog

If motherboard monitor doesn't work with your board than try sisoft Sandra. This utility will give you other important info to really get to know your computer.http://majorgeeks.com/article.php?sid=92&cat=1

I don't think it is working with my system. I had Sandra set up on my old system but haven't installed it yet on here. I have encountered several programs that don't seem to work here. I downloaded disklite but it tells me the free version doesn't support 'terminals' so I uninstalled it.

I'll find Sandra and install that to see if she will work on here.

You need to set up the sensors in MBM to read the correct temps..

the help file for MBM is really quite good..

    start the program,
right click on the icon in your system tray
    choose settings
    go to the temperatures tab
First line will have a drop down for MBM sensor
go to the second drop down menu and chose SIS950/ITE8705F 2 (this will show your case temp)
then go back to the first drop down and choose sensor 2
go back to the second drop down and choose IS950/ITE8705F 1 (this will show your CPU temp)

You can play with the Prog after that..
the above sensors are from the MBM website on the MOBO list

    Hope that helps

Yes, that helped! Now I am running at 36 degrees and 51 degrees. And the fan is running at 3200 rpm. Not sure about the voltages tho. I don't know what they are measuring or what they should be measuring.

ooops... I'm logged in on boy's computer/user. Sorry about that. hehehe

How do you get MBM to show the CPU utilization?

    Right click icon....

    go to Settings

    go to the CPU tab

scroll down and there is a check mark "Enable CPU Usage"

Voila!! Handy little tool for me!
