A friend has a HDD of about 20 Gb which has a 5 Gb partition for Win98 and a 15 Gb partition for whatever.....
I want to get rid of the 15 Gb partition and extend the 5 GB partition to cover the whole of the drive. Does anybody have any ideas about doing this without destroying the Win 98 installation or am I going to have to FDisk it?

I think Partition Magic would do it but I really don't want to pay for what will be a "one off" use.

    Thanks in advance.

    Scouse-t,

Your friend doesn't have the stuff to do it on his own without spending bucks on software or another HD. But with another HD involved, there are several ways to do what he wants.

Do you have a drive imaging program on YOUR machine? That would get us part way to a solution.

I'm thinking that without spending money for an imager OR for a partitioning utility (too bad it's not XP, because diskpart will, in fact, EXPAND a partition --but won't shrink one), the easiest workaround solution would be to remove the drive from your friend's machine, install it in yours, and go from there.

Copying his entire W98 partition to a folder on your HD, then formatting and partitioning HIS HD with FDISK, and then copying BACK the contents of his W98 partition to the new, larger active partition on his HD shd work.

Got a spare small HD he can use?

Just trying to think of ways.

I also agree with the wiz. I've done that multiple times before and came out successful. It takes longer, sure, but the outcome is worth it.

    Stupid, stupid man!!!!!

The machine is a dual boot win2K win98 with two hard drives and I have disk imaging software!

Sometimes I do wonder about the state of my brain.......I go to the fridge, open the door and wonder what I went there for!

Thanks guys for stating the obvious to an idiot :p

Sometimes it just takes a wee dose of the obvious to kickstart the completely NON-idiotic brain. And you're not in trouble when you can't remember what you went to the fridge for; you're in trouble when you don't recognize the fridge.

If you need any help with this process down the road, just ask. There's a lot of experience here with this.
