Sharing internet over a network. Need some help.

I have recently purchased a laptop and today I bought a UTP crossover cable to connect it to my desktop (which is going to be the host). I have set up a network and I can see the sharing folder on my desktop through my laptop. I can't connect to the internet though. My desktop is (obviously :p) connected to the internet right now, and the crossover cable is connected to both computers. I've checked on the desktop network options and it IS set to "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection" and the laptop is set to "Obtain an IP address automatically" in the TCP/IP properties etc.
On the laptop in network connections in the "Internet Gateway" section there is a "Internet Connection". If I double click that it says "connecting" then "connected". It still says "disconected" after though. Agh so confuzzling!

I shudder as I utter the words but I think you need to turn 'internet connection sharing' on.

Or better yet get a router and let that handle the internet and plug both computers into it. You will have a network still and will be able to access each computer from the other.

Okay so I fiddled with some things and now it comes up with "BT Broadband on ..." I can disconnect the internet on my desktop computer by using my laptop. If I try to connect to it using my laptop it now goes "Connecting" then "Connection Failed!". Anyway, when it does actually say connected in Network Connections on my laptop, if I go onto IE and go to a website, it won't do anything. If I find the status on the "BT Broadband on ..." it does say that the laptop is receiving/sending packets ...
    Windows is weird...

Hmm, matt.chugg, yeah well internet connection sharing appears to be on. I may buy a wireless router at a later date. They are expensive tho. =/

    amongst other things.

Since the desktop is the host it might be easier if you manually configure the network settings on it.

IF you are using a firewall (which you should be especially since you would appear you are connected directly to the internet) you need to configure it to allow throgh certain things like 'accept dns queries' (port 53 on udp If I rmemeber correctly) If your using ZA I think it has an option to tell it that the computer is an ICS gateway.

You will need to tell the laptop that your main computer is the gateway in tcp/ip settings in the network connections properties.

Like I said a router is a much better option.

    I don't use ZA, I use Kerio.
I have tried manually setting the desktop's IP (192.168.0.1) and manually sending the gateway on the laptop to that. The laptop's IP I set to 192.168.0.2. The subnet mask for both, the default 255.255.255.0. Not sure what to put in the DNS server sections.
And then I've tried the auto thing too.

Your laptop should have the following

    IP Address 192.168.0.2
    Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
    Gateway 192.168.0.1
    DNS 192.168.0.1

    Give that a whirl.

Also you may try restarting your computers.

    Done.
Oh and yeah, I've tried restarting.
It says Connected, Firewalled next to the LAN connection... Just can't share and at the moment, no internet connection option appears on my laptop either. =/

My desktop has Kerio Firewall / Avast! Antivirus. My laptop has McAfee as it was pre-installed when I first got it. I disabled the firewall while it is connected to the network because the desktop already has one running...

Ahh, it seem's that I'm still having problems...

    Okay, new situation:
I have a router which is plugged into a phone socket through a micro filter. The other end is linked via an ethernet cable to my desktop computer. My old DSL modem isn't connected to anything. The router is a "Linksys Wireless-G, ADSL Gateway Kit for Notebooks" Model number: WGKPC354G-UK.
I'm using the desktop computer right nowright now and it is working fine on the internet.
My laptop can connect to the wireless network.

Network Connections on the Laptop, some properties and the wireless connection thingy:

At the moment the wireless connection says "Connected" rather than "Problem" actually.

I've ipconfig checked everything and it says "Connected" on the laptop (to the wireless network). But if i try to ping the router's ip, it times out.
Oh and WEP security is 128bit and i have a 13 letter/digit passphrase and the 26 digit key too. I don't think that's an issue.
