Ramnit.a infection

    Greetings,

We seem to have stumbled our way into a ramnit.a infection. We've searched the forum here, and it appears that this is quite a nasty little bug.

We followed the instructions in the READ ME sticky post and have attached the logs. However, it appears that the infection persists; McAfee Enterprise On-Access Scan is still warning of infections (in seemingly normal files, like .dll and .exe files that are legitimate) and the machine is running slower than normal, as if bogged down.

Any and all help would be extremely appreciated.

    Thank you,
    Will & Jane

Please immediately do the below. You must do this immediately and you must complete all 3 scans one after the other with only the delay to post logs in between. DO NOT use your PC for anything else but these instructions.

Run this Using ESET's Online Scanner and immediately attach the log.

Then run the Eset scan a second time and attach the 2nd log.

Then run the Eset scan a third time and attach the 3rd log.

After attaching the 3rd log, if any Ramnet infections were found by Eset, try to repeat the above until it comes up clean. The only infections of Ramnet you can ignore, are ones that may be found in the System Volume Information folder which is System Restore and cannot be cleaned. We will remove them later by disabling System Restore.

    Greetings Kestrel,

The first log file is attached, over 20,000 files detected and cleaned. Wow.

Note that the .txt log file was so large that it required zipping in order to attach to this post.

    Starting second run immediately.

    Greetings Kestrel,

The second long file is attached, only 1 file detected and cleaned.

    Starting third run immediately.

That's good. Keep going. Attach the third log, and then run ESET twice more, or until it stops finding ramnit. Even one remaining infected file from Ramnit can cause it to spread so we need to keep at it.

    Attach logs each time.

    Greetings Kestrel,

The third log file is attached, only 1 file detected. I just noticed that it requires a reboot to clean properly. I suspect that this may be the same file found in the last scan.

    Will reboot and rescan.

No threats found after restart and fourth scan!

Thanks Kestrel. Please advise on what to do next.

Is McAfee flagging anything at all now?

Run combofix again by double clicking it's icon, then do this:

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

McAfee is flagging nothing during it's continuous "On Access Scan."

Will proceed as you advised and post logs shortly.

If you did not deliberately set this proxy yourself then please include it in the HJT fix below:

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    DirLook::
    c:\program files\sys32
    Folder::
    c:\documents and settings\Jimmy Killins\Application Data\Esucys
    c:\documents and settings\Jimmy Killins\Application Data\Xidao
    c:\documents and settings\Jimmy Killins\Application Data\Acyrti
    File::
    c:\program files\temp995.bat

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

Give me an update on how things are running.

    Greeting Kestrel,

Things are running normal again. Ever since we ran ESET 4 times between 9/23 and 9/25, things have been calm. McAfee is no longer flagging anything and the computer is running quickly and without the "bogged down" tendencies it had displayed previously.

I have attached the MG log file. I have also attached the CF log.

Thank you, again, for the help.

Please advise on how to proceed.

    Delete this empty folder:

    • c:\program files\sys32

Then let a week or so go by, see how things pan out, then follow final steps:

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
