Folder Options' "Show common tasks in folders" is already enabled - this seems to be a frequently recommended "solution".

It has happened a lot but I don't have any idea about how I overcame it on previous occasions.

    Any ideas please?

I don't know that "View as Slideshow" can be set as a default. But, If you want to view pictures from a camera, see attachment 1. For pictures already on your computer, see attachment 2.

The folders in which I keep photographs and other image files have "View as slide show" as the first option in Picture Tasks.

Every now and then the damned thing stops working properly. On selecting it, the facility opens and the first image is shown. In the top right corner the program controls appear, but the images don't advance either automatically or manually.

For XP, right click in some blank space within the folder, select view and choose Filmstrip.

I don't know which picture the facility opened to. Does it always open to the first one? If it opens to the last one, you'd need to go back to the beginning. I haven't had the opportunity to work with the slideshow feature because I don't take pictures anymore.

Filmstrip is just an alternative way of looking at pictures within their containing folder.

The Slide Show facility is another thing entirely. It displays one image at a time on the screen for a default time of 5 seconds before removing it and displaying the next one, etc.

Just like a slide show really.

Sorry, I have no idea what you mean.

You don't need to. Slide Show displays images with any of the common file extensions. They don't have to be photographs.

What happens if you select the view type as Filmstrip, then press 'View as a slide show'?

Another thing you could try is to delete the Thumbnail Cache. If you have CCleaner, there's the option to do this under 'Windows Explorer'. Reboot the PC once done.

The problem has, at least for the moment, been solved.

Although I tend to shy away from "cleaning" software, with the exception of CCleaner, especially registry cleaners, I ran a couple of them and "Slide Show" now functions correctly.
