    XP
3 Months Old Dell (they wont help her)
    Modem dials up and disconnects
    changed PCI slots, same thing
    bought a new modem
    same thing happens
I installed AOL to use my account (she uses another ISP)
    I installed the software
    it detected the modem
I checked diagnostics and queried the modem
    successful
I have it checked to detect dial tone before dialing
but I never hear the dial tone
I hear the dialing and the handshake loud and clear but then after about a minute it disconnects (even though I have option selected to NOT disconnect after 60 seconds of no connect).
I moved the card between 3 pci slots
    always the same
can I attempt to type in another modem string?
and if the answer is yes....
    1) what string?
    2) why would it happen that I would need to do that?

    Linda

    Go to Start>Programs>Accessories>Communications> Hyperterminal
Type any name & select an icon.
Type any phone number & check the selected modem is the one installed.
    Next window <Cancel>
You should have a "blank screen" with a flashing underline cursor.
Goto File> Properities> Settings Tab> ASCII Setup > Check Echo typed Chr
    Now type AT <enter>
    Modem should respond "OK"
Now AT DP xxx-xxxx (ATtention Dial Pulse & what ever phone number) or
AT DT xxx-xxxx (ATtention Dial Tone & number)
Most people are tone dialing now days.....
Modem will pick up the line and dial... the terminal window will show any connection info - usually "logon:" & "password:" .. that should help you troubleshoot you troubles a bit more.

With XP Hyperterminal, it allows you to created a connection prior to getting to the main hyperterminal window.

Good call. This can tell you if its the OS, driver, or modem.

I input my cell phone and it rang
however, the "logon" & "password" never appeared
it just kept ringing my cell and the text never changed in the window

So I figured that meant the modem worked and attempted to dial out on AOL again.
It still could not detect a modem
I tried to do it manually, but it kept wanting which COM port was being used and I could not tell.
I went to My Computer, Properties, Drivers, and looked around one of the tabs and found that modem was showing COM 8, but I tried that and it still did not work.

I get the same results (or lack thereof) with the Dell modem and the one I installed to test if it was the modem.

Dialed up to ring to my cell phone again, but this time answered the cell phone.
    No handshake.
    Dead air.

Of coarse your cell phone will not ask for a login & password ... I assumed you attempt to dial your ISP. my fault lol... Dial your ISP and see if you get any response from them or better look up Compuserver's dial up number for your area @ Compuserve . Granted they might not be your ISP but I KNOW they prompt for Login: .. so you can see it in Hyperterm.

Sounds more like a problem with AOL using the modem, than the actual hardware.

Also to find your port number:
Go Start > Settings > Control Panel
    Phones & Modems
    Second Tab Modems ...
also if you have any 'ghost modems' ie "Not Present" delete them!

I logged in successfully via Hyperterminal

well, password didnt work but at least it logged in
picked up the phone and heard the handshake

so what does that tell us then?

    Modem works
but I can't dial up in AOL and she can't dial up in her PeoplePC (or was it MSN) software either.

    Any ideas?

Reload AOHe!!, make SURE you have the correct login & password - on a valid account.

When you want to get it right don't guess.

The best advice I gave my daughter with AOL contact problems. Give them the flick. There are better dialup ISPs around.
