I have an HP Pavillion which has a Realtek AC97 on-board sound chipset. Apparently, this particular chipset is limited to 2.1 sound while I would like to use the 6 channel 5.1 speaker setup I currently own.

Is there an easy way to change the chipset -- the set being socketed on the motherboard -- or is it a major task requiring desoldering and resoldering? The current chipset is the ALC202A. What chipset would I need -- assuming the change is simple -- to upgrade to a 6 channel 5.1 surround setup; or should I just invest in a sound card?

Your only option is to buy a 5.1 soundcard;or a new mobo with onboard sound that has 5.1 surround sound and would be more expensive.
