Headphone jack issues

Here's the deal. I'm using an Acer TravelMate 2480, running Windows XP SP2, with Realtek High Definition Audio drivers installed. I've had this issue before, and cannot remember how I resolved it - I've tried reinstalling the drivers, but no dice.

The issue is this: The speakers work fine, but the headphone output is nonexistent. This happened today; they were working fine yesterday. It seems to have happened after restarting my laptop, after a failed restore from sleep that was more than likely caused by having too much stuff open in Firefox when I closed the lid (I checked before closing it, the load was approximately 150 megs; I can give further details as needed). When I plug in the 'phones, there is a delay of about two seconds, then... nothing. Output from the speakers stops, but there is no sound from the 'phones.

The headphones in question work perfectly well with both of my MP3 players, so I know they haven't died. And, as I said before, this isn't the first time. Could it possibly be the jack going bad, and if so, how would I go about replacing it? Any input would be most appreciated.

Edit to above: The only driver reporting a problem in Device Manager is modem audio.

Have you looked in Control/Panel/Sound to see if you have configured the Microphone if it is listed.

The microphone appears to be working properly.

Could there perhaps be an issue with the cooling pad I'm using? This didn't start happening until I started using one, and it's a USB-powered unit. The reason I ask is, I left it unplugged today and the phones seem to be working again. It could also be a heat issue, since this particular system tends to be warm, if not outright hot, to the touch in the area where the jacks are located and around the hard drive (this being why I bought the pad in the first place). I've looked around, and Acer seems to be notorious for hot laptops.

If it works then dont knock it ;) coolers are always a good idea with laptops.

    Hey there,

Have a look in the control panel at the sounds and audio devices applet (icon). you may find an area here in one of the tabs for playback or playback devices, audio forget exactly which one ensure that headphone is selected for playback and not p.c speakers, or similar.

Have a look at the settings there for the headphone, it might be muted or the audio set low.

If I recall correctly, the Soundmax may actually have its own Soundmax Icon option in the control panel, same area mentioned above, have a look-see at this and see what is set for the output device speakers or headphones.

another option is if you have the volume up and down, round silvery icon showing next to the clock, you maybe able to right click on this and go.. hmm options i think and this will open up the volume control master volume wave midi line in etc.. have a look here.

    Anyways G.luck with this one:wave
