    Hi,

I just turned on my computer for the first time in about 11 months and although it booted up fine, it got a blue screen of death after a while.
    (I don't have that error.)

I tried to restart and got another one.
    (PNF_LIST_CORRUPT)

I tried another restart and got the same thing (and started actually copying down the errors):
    PFN_LIST_CORRUPT
    Stop: 0x0000004E (0x00000099, 0x00021E81, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

I also tried to restart in safe mode and run a disk check and then got this error at the end of step 2 of the disk check.
    IRQL_NOT_DISPATCH_LEVEL
    STOP: 0x00000008 (0x00000000, 0x000000FF. 0x00000001, -xF78BAD49)

My next restart in safe mode with networking got this without even finishing the boot up:
    STOP: 0x0000008E (0xC0000005, 0x8062DC1C, 0xBA25720C, 0x00000000)

My next start up in safe mode worked, but after a time gave this error:
    PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA
    STOP: 0x00000050 (0x8B5653D8, 0x00000000,0xBF85807D, 0x00000000)
    win32k.sys - Address BF85807D base at BF800000, DateStamp 4f0f0ff9

Right now I can only get safe mode without networking to start up.

Where do I start to figure out what is wrong and fix this?

    Thanks.

This is a Dell Inspiron 1520 with Windows XP operating system.

It is not the computer I was working on two weeks ago. (We have been transient for the last year so were only using netbooks and I am now trying to go back to the other computers that were too large to drag around.)

Sorry about your period of hardship.

The Inspiron 1520/1521 originally shipped with Vista Home Basic. Did you "downgrade" to XP? As you may know, Microsoft Support for XP ended April 8th of this year.

Actually, I'm pretty sure it is XP Professional. (At least I think that is what I saw on the screen when I booted it up earlier.) It has whatever it came with on it. This is a fairly old computer (maybe 2008 or 2009) and I originally bought it refurbished. I think I got the end of the XP if I remember correctly.

I know that Microsoft XP support ended April 8, but I need to see if the machine can work if I'm going to go through the bother of upgrading. I'm not really in the market for a new computer because we had a baby this past year and I haven't gone back to work full-time yet. I've been using the computer I have for my part-time job, but it has some problems of its own and they aren't getting me a new one anytime soon.

The computer was working fine when I last used it. I had actually just taken it in to get it looked at and been given a clean bill of health not long before I put it away.

I would like to see if there is anything I can do to fix the problems since I think it could probably handle Windows 7 if I can get it working.

I ran the service tag and what I got is below. I bought this directly from Dell. How would I determine what drivers I would need to try and update and how would I find them? Thanks.

I read the components list. I see it did, in fact, ship with XP Pro SP2. You need to download and install SP3 and any Security updates that were available through 4/8/14.

The Dell Support site should have a Drivers and Downloads tab or button where you can get drivers and manuals for your specific computer. Most computer manufacturers provide driver updates for a year. Trying to use driver updates beyond what the computer manufacturer supplies has caused issues.
