No Audio on Speakers when PC is connected to TV

I have recently purchased a reconditioned little computer as my media centre which I have connected to my 50" plasma TV by HDMI lead to a Yamaha Receiver . I have downloaded Plex and finally fixed the screen overflow problem I had. But try as I might I can't get the sound to come out of my 3.1 speakers - only from the PC.

I have updated all drivers. It doesn't matter if I am trying to watch something on Plex or just a movie or music on the Optiplex, the sound always comes from the Optiplex speaker and not from my stereo speakers. I checked in control panel and it says the stereo speakers are not connected (see attached screenshot) - but I didn't think I needed to connect them separately if I'm using a HDMI cable.

I have been working on this set up for about 6 weeks. Any suggestion you can give would be very appreciated.

    These are my PC specs.

Don't you hate it when you try to give all of the information needed yet you still miss something crucial? How is it that you're connecting via HDMI to a TV? I assume you have a video card. I would look into if it's installed and configured properly. With my Nvidia card I'd right click the desktop, open the Nvidia Control Panel, find the audio section and make sure audio is sent through the hdmi port. I'm not at my desktop right now or I'd be more specific.

    Hi

Check this HERE and right click the top audio device in your screenshot above and choose Set as Default and then check audio.

Any devices at all with yellow ! marks in Device Manager?

I followed your instructions and tried to make the top speakers in the screenshot the default ones but that option is greyed out.

also there are no yellow marks in the Device Manager

Hi Cabbiinc, Firstly I should advise that I am very illiterate when it comes to IT matters so please be patient and don't overestimate my abilities or understanding. I am a bit confused about the question of the HDMI connection. It is going from the PC to the Receiver and then there is another HDMI going from the Receiver to the TV. I thought that is how I would get the best sound/picture. Also, I don't think I have a video card. I can't see it on the list, and that was a cut and paste of the PCs specifications. I'm not sure how I would make sure that I haven't got one though.

Is a Graphics card the same as a Video Card?

Are you using the "Display Port", or an actual HDMI port?

    They will be listed differently.

There is no HDMI port on the PC, so I am using the Display Port on the PC to a HDMI port on the AMP. (so the cable has a Display Port connection on one end and a HDMI connection on the other).

I think the problem may be your cable. Does it specify audio and video?

If not, connect the audio separately.

I thought all HDMI cables supported audio and video.

But just to save my sanity, I tried to connect the audio with a 3.5mm jack into the headphone port going to an AV port on the AMP, but the sound was still coming out of the Optiplex. I guess I have to fiddle some more.

But I'm wondering if I should just fork out the bucks and get a technician to come around and have a look??

It depends on your graphics card as well. Some don't support audio feed through. You need to right click on the volume icon and select your output device.

I'm checking with the distributor of the DisplayPort cable to see if it supports audio.

It depends on your graphics card as well. Some don't support audio feed through. You need to right click on the volume icon and select your output device.

How do I find out whether my graphics card supports audio feed through? When I right click on the volume icon there are only 2 sets of speakers to choose. One is the default, the other is not connected and any possible options are greyed out. :(

As quoted above, you are not using a standard HDMI cable, you are using a Display Port to HDMI adapter cable. Whether this cable is capable of transcoding Display Port audio AND video or just video should have been specified on the packaging.

You need to connect the audio out 3.5 mm port on your sound card (usually green) to the audio in 3.5 mm port (usually blue) on your sound device. And if necessary, configure your sound output device (speakers) to accept the audio in for playback.

Yes it is. Sorry for the confusion. Without confusing you any more I'll just say that you've answered my question. Blujay seems to be pointing you the right direction. Hope you get it all worked out.

To add to Blujay's recommendation. If Bowks is using a standard hi-fi receiver (Kenwood, Sony, Techniques) etc.unit. Then he/she will need a 3.5mm stereo male miniplug cable with 2 RCA type male plugs on the other end. Plug the 3.5mm male plug into the green speaker output jack on the PC and plug the RCA type male plugs into the "AUX IN" jacks on the receiver. RED for right speaker, YELLOW for left speaker.

You should be able to get 1 of these cables in almost any length needed at your local Radio Shack.

Correction: the audio are RED and WHITE.
Yellow would be video on RCA plugs.

I'm pretty sure from your specs you have an Iris package. This does support audio. HOWEVER, there may be additional settings besides the standard volume settings via the audio driver, OR if you do not have the latest audio drivers installed this could be your hang up.

I ran into a similar issue with a Radeon 4850. Without a specific adapter, it would not pass audio via the DVI port via an HDMI termination. In your case, I don't think your issue is such. Make sure you have the latest drivers on all counts, and look for additional audio settings via the sound driver.

My ThinkPad uses Fn + F6 to bring up additional settings for audio via DisplayPort, but I can't guarantee it will work with your mobo/drivers.
