No computers show up in network places including the local computer. Using XP home with ethernet connection, 2wire 2700HG-E modem/router.

I've gone through the network set up wizard. I have set up shares.Network places shows the network but not the local computer or anyother devices. The command line cmd "net view computer name" shows the local computer and all its shares. Net view does not show the other comptures or the network system error 1231. Net view from others on the network to me give system error 53.

I can ping to myself and every where on the network. They can ping me. I can see the internet. All computers belong the the same workgroup.

I have gone though the whole thing with the ISP and they are sending me a new router/modem but I don't feel that is the problem.

    Any toughts

    Thanks Neil

Successful Sharing involves some general consideration in Network settings,http://www.ezlan.net/sharing.html

As well as specific adjustment of each computer according to what it is allowed to be shared.

Ok I reset the TCP/IP stack on the XP@Home machine and that seemed to have seemed to have cured part of the problem. The XP@Home machine can now see it's self and the Vista machine in Network Places. It can also access all of the Vista resources.

    The Vista machine can see
the XP@Home but permission is denied.

"\\computername is not accessible. You might not have permission to use network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

Login failure: the user hasn not been granted the login type at this computer"

I've tried this with all firewalls and virus scanners uninstalled.

I also received a new router from the ISP. This didn't make a difference.

Phoned the ISP and all they could say was that Microsoft seemed to have a problem with the XP simple file sharing.

Quick question ...do both machines have the exact same user account with the same password? And if so have you logged into each at least once?

Yes they have the same User Name and password but my understanding is that on the XP@home anyway that the remote machine gets automatically logged into the guest account.

The guest account doesn't have a password and the vista machine is never asked for a password.
