Very slow response on everything!!

I have recently installed SP2 AND Norton Systemworks 2003. My PC is hecka slow on everything now. SP2 or Norton or both responsible??

Solutions?? Any way to uninstall just the Norton Anti-Virus piece which I suspect is causing the response problems and what to replace it with . AVG or Mc Afee?

Norton is a major resource hog. I don't know about uninstalling the anti-virus part of norton though. You can simply disable realtime scanning of norton and then install a smaller anti-virus program. Don't go with Mcafee cause it is just as big of a resource hog as norton.

I used to install Norton on all machines I would setup for customers/friends, and I always hated how the system would lose about 40% of its performance afterwards (so it seemed that much of a loss in performance, not an exact approximation). Than I heard about AVG from MG, and I use that instead, I have seen it catch the same viruses Symantec does and it doesn't change the system performance one bit.

The only time I use Norton now is for customers who won't budge from the brand name......

 

Is it just the Norton Anti-Virus part of Systwmworks that causes the problem? What about the other tools with Systemworks like one button ckup, etc? OK to keep those tools and dump NAV?

jdeh, if it was me I'd keep all of Systemworks, except the AV. Windoctor and Speeddisk I use all the time. I'd install AVG or Avast instead of Norton AntiVirus. I don't know how difficult it is to separate NAV from Systemworks. maybe uninstall the lot and do a custom install, if possible, of the stuff you want to keep. I'm using W98SE and and older version of Systemworks so I don't know about the later versions. Bazza

Uninstalling NAV from system works is simple, go to the control panel and select uninstall system works. It will then ask if you want to modify or complet uninstall. Select modify, tell it to remove NAV and it will remove that and leave the rest of system works on there. I did this last week and installed AVG on my older systeems I don't use as much anymore. I can't afford NAV for 6 PC's. So only 3 have it now and might loss that when the subscription is up. I originally put AGV on the older ones to test it and it seems to work fine for me. It has found a few suspicious things. But I know what those are and they should be thought of as virus or trojans.

Bazza & JCM>>thanks...uninstalled Norton and then did a custom reinstall without NAV...using AVG for AV and its clean and doesn't hog resources like NAV.

Also, I bought a Maxtor 160 gigger at FRY's for $69 (+ tax) (might as well give it to me!) and ghosted my old 40 gigger to that, then ghosted to my backup 80 gigger. So now i have 80 primary and 160 slave and a very lean mean machine since all of my big hitters(images and movie files and tunes) are on the 160 drive. It makes a huge difference NOT to have a lot of stuff on your primary drive.

Glad we could assist. By coincidence I did an uninstall of Systemworks and re-install omitting NAV on my laptop in the last few days. I prefer Avast to AVG, but different strokes for different folks. Bazza

Yes, Avast is freeware like AVG, and in my opinion is a better app. But opinions are like ***** . and everyone has their own. Baz, glad to see that you have swapped to Avast, but I am surprised. I, too, was a long time user of Norton AntiVirus, but when they started the registration crap, I switched to Avast. I always thought it was the security part of their suite that was the resource hog, and caused problems.

 

Have not used NAV for many years. Have used AVG and now Avast since 1999 at least. My post was to stress that I did a custom install of Systemworks, omitting the "feature" of installing the NAV at the re-install. Bazza
