Strong Malware infection

    Hi there,

    system- Dell Dimension 3000 OS- XP-sp2


    I have tried booting into safe mode to run ad-aware hjt s&d etc. However as soon as I type in my administrator password it attempts to log in then just stops and no icons-taskbar load. I can login in normally, but it took a good part of half an hour to get to system restore....this failed. I'm unable to get to my memory stick to run any anti-malware programs or HJT. I can't think of anything else to try apart from formatting and reinstalling Xp

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

    If you cannot run anything, there is not much we can do for you. Especially if neither safe mode or normal boot do not work. You could try booting to last known good configuration and se what happens. Also in Safe Boot mode, you could use CTRL-SHIFT-ESC to bring up Task Manager and you can run misc things form the File, New Task (Run...) command. You could possibly use this to run Explorer and then copy things from your flashdrive to the PC to install and run.

    Thanks I wasn't aware of the key combination CTRL-SHIFT-ESC. That got me as far as the task manager but I was unable to run the programs I needed.

    FORMAT NTFS (quick).......only option for me now.

    You're welcome.

    You could try looking thru the process list in Task Manager for any processes that are eating up all of your CPU time and killing them to see if it helps.
