Have you got SP1 loaded? That might fix the problem.

Could you give us some hardware specs mainly what Mobo you have plus is this a new occurence or have you had it since installing XP ( some older mobos dont support auto shutdown and you see a "You can now Power Off" or simliar message )

Plus boot into safe mode and see if you can shutdown OK from there......

To get into Safe Mode start your PC and hit F8 repeatidly until you see a boot menu and then pick Safe Mode then once booted into windows try and shutdown.

    Glad you got it, help.

I was going to suggest that you read more of the aumha page, specifically this:

When Windows XP won’t powerdown automatically, the APM/NT Legacy Power Node may not be enabled. To enable this, right-click on the My Computer icon, click Properties | Hardware | Device Manager | View. Check the box labeled “Show Hidden Devices.” If it’s available on your computer, there will be a red X on the APM/NT Legacy Node. Try enabling it and see if this resolves the powerdown problem (Tip from Terri Stratton). Or, to check the other side of the APM/ACPI coin, open the Power Options applet in Control Panel. If there is an APM tab, make sure the “Enable Advanced Power Management Support” box is checked. (MSKB 313290)

If you bump into this again, or somebody else here has the problem, that might be helpful stuff.

Hey, guy. Try this little program. Just download it and put it in a folder somewhere and create a shortcut to it wherever you want the shortcut. Right click the shortcut and choose Properties, and add a space after ShutdownXP.exe in the command line, then add the number 3, so it now says
    <path to it>\ShutdownXP.exe 3

    Now double click the shortcut.

    Let us know.

If you want another shortcut to make it Reboot, do the same thing to make another shortcut and use the number 4 instead of the number 3.

    ShutdownXP here

Did you try booting to safe mode and then shutting down?

also Nvidia has a driver helper service which is notorious in slowing shutdown down..... Control Panel > Admin Tools > Services and find, stop and disable "NVIDIA Display Driver Service"

That motherboard is notorious for issues with XP...

Clear your Event veiwer logs, and reboot.

    Then try to shutdown.

What items are listed as Warning and Error in System and Application?
