Norton can't delete c:\windows\system32\services.exe with W32/Mariofev!mem (Trojan)

I was running updates which failed on Microsoft's KB2633171. I tried running McAfee that comes with from my Yahoo/ATT ISP, but it won't remove the threat from W32/Mariofev!mem in C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe although it removed TDSS.e!rootkit in XCPT-HOOK1.

Internet Explorer sometimes goes to places I am not asking it to go and services.exe sometimes takes 100% CPU.

Attached are the requested logs I was able to get. ComboFix stalled at "...may easily double" and now the icon is gone from the desktop. I was unable to download MGtools initially, but it looks to be running now. I will try ComboFix again next.

Hopefully, more soon, but I need to get back to my real work. Sorry if this isn't enough, but I had to do something to help me focus.

Here's the MGTools, but still no love from ComboFix. Will keep trying until I run out of combinations that probably don't make any sense :D

Are you missing any desktop icons or programs in your start menu? If so:

Please download and save the below tool from Grinler @ bleepingcomputer to your Desktop or anywhere else you can find it ( if the Desktop is not showing )

    http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/unhide.exe

Now run it. Now see if you can find the items that seemed to be missing?

Now download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop.

See the download links under this icon [IMG]
Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop.

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Now copy just the bold text below to notepad (Do not include any space above the word REGEDIT). Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

    1. Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    2. Click OK at the warning to continue to use The Avenger
    3. Do not change any of the check box options!
    4. Shut down your protection software now to avoid possible conflicts.
    5. Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of The Avenger
    6. Now click the [IMG] button
    7. Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    8. Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when The Avenger finishes running.
    9. Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    10. A log file from The Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will pop-up for you to view when you login after reboot.
    11. Attach this log to your next message. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

Now go to the control panel, Admin. Tools, disc management and get me a screen shot of your partitions. I think you have a fake partition:
    Code:
    Partition Disk #0, Partition #1
Partition Size 10.33 MB (10,829,824 bytes)
We will have to remove it.

Go to the below link and follow the instructions for running TDSSKiller from Kaspersky

Be sure to attach your log from TDSSKiller

Please also download MBRCheck to your desktop.

See the download links under this icon [IMG]

    • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
    • It will show a Black screen with some information that will contain either the below line if no problem is found:
      • Done! Press ENTER to exit...
    • Or you will see more information like below if a problem is found:
      • Found non-standard or infected MBR.
      • Enter 'Y' and hit ENTER for more options, or 'N' to exit:
    • Either way, just choose to exit the program at this point since we want to see only the scan results to begin with.
    • MBRCheck will create a log named similar to MBRCheck_07.16.10_00.32.33.txt which is random based on date and time.
    • Attach this log to your next message. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

Attach the screen shot and then run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).Make sure that you watch for the license agreement for TrendMicro HijackThis and click on the Accept button TWICE to accept ( yes twice ).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\MGlogs.zip

Re: Norton can't delete c:\windows\system32\services.exe with W32/Mariofev!mem (Troja

IE kept giving generic Microsoft "broke" message with option to report; this is a new fact.
Turned off wireless card, deactivated virus/spyware/firewall, booted to safe mode.
    Copied downloads from USB

I didn't think any icons/programs were missing, but figured it wouldn't hurt to run Unhide. Then, I realized that I had previously run Unihide when following instructions to remove SystemFix per http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-system-fix. This is also the site that made me believe running everything in safe mode was a good next step.

I will update with results, but wanted to say thank you for the information.

Re: Norton can't delete c:\windows\system32\services.exe with W32/Mariofev!mem (Troja

    1. Unhide made no noticeable changes; last time it did wonders.

    2. fixME.reg was successful.

    3. Avenger ran, but I forgot about safe made. Log attached.

    4. Disk Management screen shot attached.

    5. TDSSKiller was also run previously, but this time it didn't require any file renaming. Log attached.

    6. MBRCheck ran. Log attached.

    More to follow directly.

    7. MGTools ran; first ran .exe on desktop, then ran .bat as instructed. Logs attached as MGlogs2.zip and MGlogs3.zip respectively as renamed after each run.

That should complete your instructions. Thank you again.

Re: Norton can't delete c:\windows\system32\services.exe with W32/Mariofev!mem (Troja

Please re-run TDSSKiller and make sure that these do not show up or you mark them for quarantine or cure:
    Code:
    23:53:43.0906 2988 \Device\Harddisk0\DR0 ( TDSS File System ) - skipped by user
    23:53:43.0906 2988 \Device\Harddisk0\DR0 ( TDSS File System ) - User select action: Skip
If you find you are missing anything, you will find them here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\TEMP\smtmp\

You didn't tell me how things are running now.

Re: Norton can't delete c:\windows\system32\services.exe with W32/Mariofev!mem (Troja

All Good! Thank you very much. Just need to know if I should and (if so) how to remove all the tools.

Per your last post, I did the following:

    1. booted normal

    2. set additional tdsskiller options

    3. ran tdsskiller that found four skips: unsigned files, suspicious object, medium risk (AegisP, dvd43llh, pcouffin, s24trans)

    4. saw nothing like the code below in the tdsskiller log

    5. saw windows updates were applied, but deferred restart

    6. saw icons already on desktop in smtmp

    7. turned on scanning and firewall as well as network card

    8. restarted

    9. ran Norton full scan that found nothing :D

    10. ran Windows update that found nothing and had already installed KB2633171

    11. clicked around the web for about 30 minutes without any unintended pages

Re: Norton can't delete c:\windows\system32\services.exe with W32/Mariofev!mem (Troja

    Good to know.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.We recommend them for doing backup scans when you suspect a malware infection.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Malware removal from a National Chain = $149
Malware removal from MajorGeeks = $0

Excellent point! If you don't think there are significant risks, I'm going to keep using the laptop for a few more days to make double sure there are no other malware problems.
