All my desktop and start menu icons have disappeared. I think it is due to malware. I have looked into the issue, and have so far tried unhide.exe and another piece of software that restores the start menu. Neither worked. I've also tried copying the contents of folder 'smtmp', but it doesn't exist where it should. I believe I've removed the malware, but I'm just unable to get my icons to show again. Can anybody help please? Thanks.

Exactly why do you think it is malware? Do you have other problems?

unhide only works if they were hidden by malware. smtmp only exist in the user temp folder if malware created it. If don't have this folder and unhide did not help then your problems may not be due to malware.

    How?

It's not actually my computer, it's a friends. I'm presuming it's malware because he downloaded something, all his icons disappeared, then software popped up trying to get him to pay for software to remove the problem. That and the fact anti-malwarebytes found and removed a few hundred threats when I scanned the machine.
