Email USPS virus - all files hidden, url redirection

Someone clicked on an EXE that was attached in a zip coming in by email, claiming to be from the USPS. This caused all files to be attributed hidden, and all url's are redirected (now still, in chrome portable, so perhaps DNS related).
(Bad luck as normally the mails are AV filtered by provider, but this was out of service for a few days).

Combofix hangs in the first screen ("this should take only 10 minutes"), even after I let it sit for many hours.

As I can not find the install DVD for this computer, I want to bring it back to working order as much as is possible.

I did a second scan with MBAM, instead of the quick scan as mentioned in your guide I did a full scan, and it found traces of FakeHDD again...

    Log attached.

Where is the Combofix log? :confused You should have run that. Also do this:

I want you to run TDSSKiller so refer to the below for how to do so.

    TDSSkiller - How to run

Please also download MBRCheck to your desktop
    • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
    • It will show a Black screen with some information that will contain either the below line if no problem is found:
      • Done! Press ENTER to exit...
    • Or you will see more information like below if a problem is found:
      • Found non-standard or infected MBR.
      • Enter 'Y' and hit ENTER for more options, or 'N' to exit:
    • Either way, just choose to exit the program at this point since we want to see only the scan results to begin with.
    • MBRCheck will create a log named similar to MBRCheck_07.16.10_00.32.33.txt which is random based on date and time.
    • Attach this log to your next message. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

As I indicated in my first post, Combofix hangs after the first screen, also in Safe mode.

TDSS Killer does not start up, even if I rename randomly with com extension. Also not in safe mode.

    MBRCheck indicates a faked MBR.

Do you have your XP boot CD?

  6. arnoldus

    arnoldus Private E-2

I have a boot cd for XP, but not the oem HP one (don't think that it matters).

(btw, in the disk management tool, there is an active 10Mb partition that I don't recognize, this is probably the virus).

Attach a screen shot of disc management so Kes can see the partitions on your system and their sizes. ;)

(Thanks to thisisu for the organisation of steps for this whole procedure)

First, download Download gparted-live-0.10.0-3.iso (115.1 MB)
You will need a blank CD to burn this ISO to. You can burn the .ISO using software like ImgBurn.

Now boot off of this newly created CD.

    You should be here...
    Press ENTER

By default, "do not touch keymap" is highlighted. Leave this setting alone and just press ENTER.

Choose your language and press ENTER. English is default [33]

Once again, at this prompt, press ENTER

You will now be taken to the main GUI screen below
    [IMG]
According to your logs, the partition that you want to delete is 10.33 MB (10,829,824 bytes)
Click the trash can icon to delete and then click Apply.

You should now be here confirming your actions:

    Now you should be here:

    Now double-click the [IMG] button.

You should receive a small pop up like this:
Choose reboot and then press OK.

Now continue on with the below.

You need to use your Windows XP CD to boot to the Recovery Console and run the fixmbr to clear a Master Boot Record infection that you have.

You can read the below to help you do this:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654

After running the fixmbr command then boot back to normal mode Windows and try running TDSSkiller now. Then attach the log. Also explain if you are still having any malware problems.

Reboot to normal mode and re-run MBRCheck and attach the new log.

  10. arnoldus

    arnoldus Private E-2

    I followed the instructions.
I now get "Non-System disk or disk error".

I did all possible order sequences of Fixboot, fixmbr and bootcfg /rebuild, to no avail.
bootcfg finds the install on C:\windows, but booting itself does not work.

Before all anti-malware steps, I did a chkdsk and it did not find faulty sectors, so I do not think the drive is broken in any way.

I got it to booting again.
The problem was that the partition was not active, so not bootable to windows.
I booted using a bootloader USB with the tool from Novicorp (XP install/CD needed), and made the partition active with the Disk Management.
Also, I see that the flag has changed in GParted to bootable.

So perhaps add to your guide to make sure to rightclick and manage flags, and double check it is set to bootable in GParted.

Now, it seems everything works, here are my logs.

    Everything seems normal, except for:

    * very slow for the window to come up when I rightclick on a desktop shortcut icon and select properties
    * very slow when I do ctrl alt del, or ctrl shift esc, to get the task manager. However(!), if I rightclick on the taskbar and ask for task manager, it comes right away.

    Virusscanner has been disabled.

Looks like there is still a little bit to do.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista or Windows7) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

Now we need to use ComboFix by sUBs

    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Driver::
    TIUR

    FileLook::
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\kcpebs.sys

    File::
    c:\docume~1\RECEPT~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\TIUR.exe
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\NoyJYUxcZGATzd
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\~NoyJYUxcZGATzd
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\~NoyJYUxcZGATzdr

    DirLook::
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\aamdata
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up, and you recieve the following error: "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion". Then the answer is to REBOOT the machine, and all will be corrected.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista or Windows7) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

We do not close threads as a rule, so do not fret. :)

Could you please get this: kcpebs.sys into a zipped file and attach it for me in your next post? To do this, see the below:

Please go to start > Run and paste in the following:

    log retrievable @ C:\collect.zip

  20. arnoldus

    arnoldus Private E-2

Nothing happens when I do that, the zip file is not created, furthermore, I can not find that file myself, with all hidden and system files set to viewable.

    Here you are.

While CF was running after a reboot, someone closed the program the first time unfortunately. Since then, the tracking software ActivTrak (I believe the service is called svcthost.exe) does not work properly anymore, also not after a reinstall.

EDIT: after several reboots, at the moment it seems to be working again.

    Merry Christmas!

My tracking program is not working again. I believe it worked when logged in as another user.
Is it possible to know if Combofix leaves particular settings altered if it's not allowed to finish properly?

What is inside of this folder?
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\aamdata

    What are these files?
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\Aamff20.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\Aamff30.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\Aamff70.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\AamNW.dll

Are they in any way connected with Activtrak?

  25. arnoldus

    arnoldus Private E-2

Yes; these are ActiveTrak files, the folder is the local storage folder.

    Is CF interfering with this?

  26. Kestrel13!

Not from what I can see. I just asked because they were files I did not recognize.
    • Are you having any more malware issues?
    • Does your browser still redirect you?

No and no. Everything seems to be fine.

    Merry Christmas. :)

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required (If we renamed it please rename it back to Combofix.exe.
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
