I just gave my Win. 98SE computer, which has not been used in quite some time, to a friend for his daughter. She lives in a house which is totally wireless, the computer has a D-Link Ethernet card but nothing "wireless". Is there anything I can plug into the Ethernet card that will read the "wireless" signal or do I have to put a "wireless" card into the computer ?? If so, would anybody know of a "card" that will work with Win. 98SE, driver compatibility etc...

Any help will be appreciated -

    Thanks

yes, you need to get an internal PCI wireless card (if you have the available slot for it)...or you can get a USB Wireless adapter. As for Win98SE compatibility, you may have to check with common hardware manufacturers

Linksys, Netgear are the couple that come to mind...

I see that some wireless cards are noted as PCI 2.2, I believe the MB in this computer supports PCI only (I think ??) - are the 2.2 backwards compatible, this computer was built in 2001 -

    Again

    Thanks for any help

I think USB would be easier. You would have to open the case, and the adapter can be used on other PCs if needed, even laptops:

There were surprisingly few USB wifi adapters at Newegg, but those above give you an idea of what's available. They pretty much all work with Win98SE (and NOT just Win98; you MUST have the 2nd Edition). And they are USB 2.0 which is compatible with USB 1.1 which is probably what the old PC has. If you decide to buy in a retail store, just be sure it mentions Win98SE on the packaging... all the big network companies make 'em: Netgear, Belkin, Zonet, CNet, Linksys, DLink, 3Com, etc....

dlb, I didn't think that USB was a viable way to go with 98se, after reading your reply I believe I will give that 1st item a chance and see what happens, the fact it will work with a laptop is a plus -

    Thanks for the info

Just be sure that whatever USB wireless gizmo you purchase that drivers for 98SE are available. It can be a hassle because 98SE isn't plug and play but it is doable. I added a USB to ethernet adapter to an old notebook so I could hard wire it to my router.

Sorry it has taken so long to post a reply, I did get the following USB Adapter http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16833156152 , and my friends daughter who has my old computer just called yesterday to say the Adapter worked fine, not sure if she used the Driver that came with the Adapter or the one I downloaded from Trendnet's web site - however she is happy with her internet connection -

Thanks for the help everyone !!!!
