I just bought an Radeon 9250 and i downloaded the drivers. But i have a problem when i turn my cpu on, it loads up through the windows window. But when it starts booting up other things, it just shuts down. Any ideas?

My friend thought I may need a new power supply, if you think i do, any idea on what wattage to go with?

    thanks

Well , what is your current power supply?

It seems that way, but as ellis902 says, please provide the specs on the PSU. With that said, if it is an already underpowered PSU, when your vid card is being used more heavily (in addition to the rest of the devices that need power too), your PSU will not be able to provide the power needed and could cause shutdowns. There are other factors that could cause those symptoms, but considering the context that this began right after adding the new card, it seems like the PSU could be the culprit. Anytime you add a new component you have to be mindful that it will take more power to run it and you must know if your PSU will sustain.

If it is indeed the PSU then, as far as wattage, in the ball park of about 450W should be more than sufficient for most systems. Wattage isn't always the most important factor, though. The amperage on the 12V rails should be good as well. Also consider the number of rails. Generally speaking, the more power the better and you can go as high as you want as far as wattage of the PSU.

I would say it is the PSU. If you wanted to get something inexpensive yet adequate, newegg.com has some great prices. In the ball park of about 450W will be more than enough for what you need. You can look around here and there for an extremely cheap PSU in that wattage, but you never know when those will go bad. Newegg has great prices and reviews from users so you can get a feel for what you may expect. Good luck.

I'm running a 350w PSU w/ 28A on the 12v rails and I've never had a power problem. Video: GeForce FX5700 256mb, 2x512mb DDR3200 Corsair, Athlon64 3200, MSI K8N Neo Platinum, 2 optical drives, 160gb SATA HD, FDD..... If you downloaded the drivers w/ the 9250 already installed, then the problem may not be the PSU (even though it is a bit too puny).... boot in safe mode and see if you still shut down... it may be a thermal issue: the CPU is working a bit harder w/ the new drivers for the 9250 and therefore is overheating. It's only a theory though. Still, upgrade the PSU! Keep us posted as to what's happening on your end ;)

That's true, Dave, but I see this from time to time with these cheap PSU's. Of course, due diligence is always good. 350W and 250W is a big difference and 28A on 12V rails is solid. I am betting that that is one of those PSU's from a retail computer that put in the bare minimum (like a emachine for ex.). Although, I am not certain because I don't know his specs.

Art2d2- What is the 12V rail amperage on your PSU? You can find it if you open the case and look at the sticker on the PSU. It will be under 12V, a number with an A (ex. 22A). If that is very low that then it is not a very powerful PSU and it is already limited in wattage. Just a thought. Still be diligent in going through all the possibilities before replacing something you may not necessarily need to.

Yeah- 250w is too small, regardless.... unless it's got 68A on the 12v :D L O L hee hee hee

Your PSU will no doubt struggle, but I found this 9250 radion card, which I am using in my old computer, could be difficult with drivers - I found this one works well with it.

Yeah...I looked up his card. It is not a beast where power is concerned- DirectX 8 (older card), passive cooling, no seperate power connection required, and no listing for minimum power requirements. Still....that PSU is pushing it and could still be the problem depending on what else he rules out.
