ive got some MPEG layer-3 films i want to play in WMP, but they dont seem to load while normal Mpeg files work. I recently reformatted my computer and before they used to work. do i need to download anything so they can play in WMP?

Yes, sir! You're likely in need of a codec. MPEG requires DivX.

However, I would strongly recommend not even bothering with WMP (at least for movies) VLC Media Player has just about every codec you could ever need built in. This baby has played every video file I've ever come across. Plus its much smaller, and open source!
