My iphone opens programs and types without me touching it.
It wont respond to what it to do.
I took it to the MAPPLES store
they said, "looks like your hardware that does the touch is failing

    -but sometimes it works fine
    --well it fails intermintely!
    why is it failing?
--its a small part, small things fail
so what can I do about it?
--well we can get you a new part/sensor for $120
    how long will that last?
    --warrenty is 90 days
no, its a small part, so how long till it fails?
--it'll last till the rest of the phone life
    makes sense. perfect sense.

so what the heck is going on?

I took off my mophie case and screen guard(plastic sheet) and the phone still wont respond/opens apps all by itself(untouched)
I read about this issue on line, so it common
    what to do?

    huh?
I went directly to an apple store and the guy there told me my phone was out of warrenty by 3 months or so, got in dec 2013 and that some part of the phone was failling because the part is small

yes, the part was failing cause it was smalll

and I can buy a new part for $150 and have it replaced

when I asked, why wouldnt that part just fail again after anouther 18 months, he didnt know

I have never heard of a phone just needing to be fixed because of small parts that wear out
I might get a iphone 4 or older, something thats been around the block.

Typically I would reset the phone in case it was software. Beyond that, you're at the mercy of Apple here. Upgrade, if possible or if the phone is worth $150 bucks, go for it. Sorry, I don't have more, repairing anything Apple hardware is not like a PC where you can easily fix it yourself.
