When I subscribed to Trend Micro there was a facility in the suite to check whether someone else was using my wireless connection. Now I have (courtesy of MG) switched to free, lighter, apps, I no longer have this facility. Is there a free app available that will let me check for wireless pirates? Thanks.

Maybe your wireless router (assuming you are using one) has a menu that lists clients which are connected to you?

Get a router with wep or wpa. I am still using Trend Micro with Windows but no longer use that part of the program. When I want to connect to our wireless router for the first time, with Windows or Linux, I need to enter the code. And even then, what happens to the signal between the router and the computer is up in the air so to speak. There are programs out there to hack your router even with the added security, but will make them work for it. If you reinstall PC-cillin the first update doesn't require activation, and you could also use that feature. But is it worth the disk space and the headache?

WEP keys are easy to crack (took me 10 minutes using Linux BackTrack 2) WPA can take a while longer (upto an hour) but still really easy.
The only solution I can provide for the hackers is to try and find a peice of software that randomises your keys (you input 10 keys and it switchs every few days)

As for the problem at hand I'm unsure of any programs that do that (other then the one you mentioned)

If you use a stong enough password, it will take well over an hour. At that point, lowering your xmit rate to try and keep the siginal confined to your area, turning off broadcast, MAC filtering, and taking a baseball bat to people in white vans sitting outside your home for inordinate amounts of time, and you have a much more secure network ;)
