The author of JV16 Power tools v 1.3 that had be offered as freeware has pulled a very underhanded and unprofessional tactic.

After having gone to shareware with version 1.4 (which is fine) he had the gall to disable version 1.3 through the auto update feature with the message that "version 1.3 is out of date, please visit the web site to update the program" (or words to that effect) He disabled v1.3 leaving the only alternative, to uninstall.

JV16 Power tools, v1.3, was offered as "freeware". This tactic is in my opinion, if not unlawful invasion, certainly an unethical invasion of one's computer, disabling a lawfully installed piece of software.

I informed the author that I had planned to purchase "RegSupreme" in as much as I did not use all the features of JV Power tools. Needless to say, he has lost that sale and I hope others consider this individuals conduct before making any purchase from him.

Whats funny about this, is that it probably disabled the first of the year, instead of through the autoupdate feature, and indeed your computer was not invaded.

But feel free to jump to conclusions ;)

Don't get all riled over zero. Okay, there was no WARNING that there was an expiry date written into the program code for the old freeware version of jv16. That is ABSOLUTELY all that's going on here. Has nothing to do with updaters or the Macecraft site. Nothing added to your registry; no invasion, no spyware, ... zero.

Nobody who THINKS he still has the freeware version of jv16PowerTools running is RIGHT, unless his CLOCK is WRONG. The lad (Jouni V) didn't fight with any of the sites that still offered the old freeware version for the months since the new shareware version came out -- because he knew he had written the time bomb INTO the old version, and it was just a matter of a short time left. Patient guy.

SO ... for now the old RegCleaner 4.3 still runs, and is really solid, and if you manage to FIND the registry scanner inside the Tools menu of RegCleaner, then using all of the up-front RegCleaner tools AND the registry scanner in its Tools menu will do the trick very well for users. (The problem has always been that LOTS of users of RegCleaner never even knew its registry scanner was THERE, because it was hidden in the Tools menu bar drop-down.)

BUT the new RegSupreme, which has none of the OTHER tools that RegCleaner had (Startup list control, uninstall list control, etc.) is a MUCH improved REGISTRY SCANNER (but ONLY a registry scanner).

The 2003 (shareware) edition of jv16 PowerTools (from Macecraft, not jv16.org) has the OLD registry scanner from the OLD PowerTools (freeware), but Jouni has promised publicly that the NEXT release of (shareware) PowerTools will INCLUDE the latest RegSupreme engine and algorithm, and there will be some kind of deal for owners of the (shareware) RegSupreme who want to upgrade to the full PowerTools WHEN THAT NEW VERSION of PowerTools COMES OUT. (Many people have been misled by the text on the Macecraft site into believing that the RegSupreme engine and algorithm are IN the shareware Power Tools. Notto True-o, but that'll be true in the NEXT full release of jv16PT.)
